Default Would a subcontractor with a certification or training be chosen over experience?
Talking with other subcontractors often I hear them ask about training or certification making a difference in getting projects. Please give your feedback/advise on the above question.

For me, anyone I have working on my team or on a project I simply want to know they can get the job done in the time frame requested.

Training and certification isn't that important to me unless it's a necessity for getting the project completed.

I look at this way, I have a project, we've negotiated a rate and other terms. You get your portion of the project completed within the time frame and I'll work with you again.

Simple as that.

In today's market there are so many certifications for so many things and many of the training programs out there offer their form of "certification" simply because you've received a "certificate" of completion. This isn't meant to negate all of the very valuable certifications that are available, but I look at this way, if my client hasn't a clue about the certification then it's not going to mean much to them anyway.

I'm a perfect example, I can do just about anything you need when it comes to solving 1ShoppingCart issues, but I'm completely self taught and I haven't received any type of "certification", same goes with Wordpress and Aweber....

Okay, maybe this is just a bit of a sore point with me! LOL! I'm all for training, learning and educating but sometimes learning on the job is the absolute best way to learn.

So no having additional training or a certification isn't going to influence whether or not I hire you to work on a project.

I agree with Renee.
And I feel that the beauty of this business is that it's a level playing field for many.

I do have certifications from different associations/organizations but only because I wanted to stand out from the hundreds or thousands of others on the directory listings. Also, some associations have RFP services where only certified members can answer - so it's something that can be useful.

But not once has a prospective client or project manager ask about certifications - they'd rather have someone who is experienced in their industry, shopping cart system, or other systems they use. For example, working with internet marketers, they want someone who understands when they talk about squeeze pages, upsells, and follow-up messages. If you can show your knowledge that way, it's WAY more valuable than a stamp on your website.

I agree with the others. Although training with certification is great, and for those who have no experience can give them a start when choosing subcontractors for my practice experience and skill level are the determining factors.

To provide the best service to my clients I am looking for subs who can perform the required task/project completed correctly and within the time frame agreed.

Also, the subs must be dependable, meaning if they indicate they can work or be reached within certain time frames unless an emergency they are available.
