I didn't intend on subcontracting but ended up doing so recently to help out another VA with a couple of tasks.

1. Was working with a long contact list to clean and format it -- which she really hated doing and was taking a lot of her time. I enjoy this type of work and gave me something to do while looking for clients.

2. Was working out an Excel file for her client to perform the necessary calculations for him easily. This also was something she does not like and I enjoy.

For me this was a great opportunity to build my VA network, an opportunity to do some work (which I was missing a lot) and to make a small amount of money.

Subcontracting if handled correctly can be of value to both parties for a variety of reasons and something to consider for new VAs.

Yep, they get on the desk, I toss them onto the giant pillow next to the desk.

Cruella Coon likes MY chair, so we fight over it. The cat bowl is on top of the file cabinet so the doggies dont eat it, so they are always close.

See? This is just proof that I need someone to work with! LOL

I really hadn't considered subcontracting my services. However I've recently spoken to several VA's who started out by subcontracting and they raved about the experience, so I am starting to reconsider.

They said that it was so helpful, especially when they were starting out, to see how the more experienced VA's deal with clients, how they set up their processes, etc. For them it was a mentoring experience with the added bonus of getting paid. Sounds like a sweet deal to me.

I also subscontract my services to another VA firm. In fact, the firm I'm working with is actually looking for additional VAs so let me know if you're interested.

Subcontracting is a great way to gain experience as a VA especially if you're just starting out. You have to start somewhere. In addition, it's a great way to build professional relationships and earning testimonials. Testimonials can be everything.

It was very interesting reading the responses to sub contract with another VA -- it is a great idea. I am just getting started promoting my services and seem to been struggling finding those who would be interested. I would love to find another VA that could use help!!! I do have tons of experience but just struggling finding those clients. Thanks for this thread and this forum!!

There are many benefits to subcontracting (experience, additional hours, mentoring, learning about new skills/programs/niches, working with someone that knows how a VA works). All positives in my opinion. As far as I've experienced, subcontracting has very few drawbacks.

Is this post about subcontracting or about the cats in our lives. lol Actually, I don't have any cats but I got my puppies. Actually their dogs but little ones so their my puppies.

I haven't gotten any clients yet so I think that subcontracting might be a foot in the door so to speak. Getting started working with a seasoned VA might be a way to get a little experience and some advice on the side and maybe even a referral from the VA you work for.
The other aspect might be one VA may have more accounting experience and another may be more administrative. Together they may make a good team.

If anyone has too much work and wants to send some my way, I'm ready willing and able.

Subcontracting, in my opinion, is the equivalent of a temporary staffing service only you do it for yourself. If you (the company) need a specific skill set that you don't have, you hire it to be done for you. If you (the employee) have the skills to do the job but not the knowledge or time to find the jobs, you subcontract yourself out while learning how to get clients or the information you need to set yourself up as a full time independent VA.

I agree with the previous posts - it can be beneficial for both parties involved. I think anytime you can work with someone more experienced than you, it is beneficial. Also, teaching or coaching a new VA is beneficial in that you have to think about what you are teaching or coaching. When you teach a procedure or process, you have to master it. Often we do things on autopilot without much thought but when we have to explain it to someone, we must have a better understanding of how it's done.

I love this forum and everyone's willingness to share and assist the up and coming VA's. Thanks for the help.

I was wondering how you all got into subcontracting? Did you approach other VA's directly or previously know them and they contacted you?
