What if I want to work for someone - not myself?
Right now I work FT and subcontract PT. Most likely I'm just getting cold feet because becoming a VA is more real. How many others contemplate whether you really want to be your own boss or work for someone just at home? Maybe that's why I subcontract.
Please tell me I'm not the only one who questions owning their own business. If you have questioned yourself can you find companies that do hire you to WAHM?

Re: I want to work for someone not myself?
I live to get that steady flow of clients to be able to eventually go full-time with my business. Working for someone else is no longer secured, so we have to make and create our own path. Employee's are in the highest tax level. We pratically work almost the beginning four months out of the year for the government. Do you know who gets taxed the least? Business Owners! Business owners under the right entity have so many tax breaks. I know it gets scary at times which is why I work P/T at the moment for the steady paycheck while I build my business and if I need to outsource I want to give back to the community and train a single mother or those that don't have the experience but has the drive to learn. This is just a stepping stone for so many other great things you can do.
Don't be afraid of success. Keep your day job till you are ready to go full-time and have that steady flow of customers!
Best of luck.

Re: I want to work for someone not myself?
Hi there - I think you're feeling what a lot of us feel, and many others in different industries too. It's normal. There is the realisation that a business isn't some pet bird you have to feed every day, it' can be quite the monster - taking over your home, time and requiring concentration in areas you never needed to worry about when you were an employee as opposed to now, when you're the owner. But that's ok - change is good. It's just different and you'll be feeling very new, even if you're in your own home at the time
To get this far along you would have already had to have had a good head on your shoulders. Trust that head, and don't fear what you don't know. Often we think what we don't know is bigger than what it really is. You'll learn it as you go and if you don't take huge risks at the start - you aren't really standing to lose anything are you. Enjoy the journey - we're all here to help! This forum is fab for that!!!

Re: I want to work for someone not myself?
Collette,
Being a business owner is not for everyone. Getting up and running is half the battle, staying there is the other. Is it worth it? I would say totally and I had some reservations in the beginning too. However, you do subcontract so you already know what it takes to get out there and find work. Often times people hear become a VA, work at home, your own schedule, etc. etc. and think I can do this since they have these skills, but soon find that having the skills and owing the business are not one in the same.
If you are unsure, continue to sub until you feel confident and ready that you want to be a (full-time) business owner. Is it cold feet? Only you will know that and it is okay if you want to continue on the way you are.
Whatever you choose, there is no right or wrong answer. Some folks love being an entrepreneur and others just don't.
Best of luck in your decision, and let us know if we can be of any support to you.

Re: I want to work for someone not myself?
I'm with you on the cold feet...I find the more I'm getting into it, the more afraid I'm becoming of being successful........LOL...that sounds strange, but it's true. I'm worried about handling the clients, I'm worried about getting TOO Many clients, not enough clients, being ripped off, not having enough time to put my all into it..etc, etc. Any and everything to fear, I think I've got it.
BUT, I am moving forward full speed ahead because I can not depend on my employer to keep me employed anymore and would much rather have security on my own, so scared or not, I'm going for it!!
Wishing you all the best, it will seem so easy when you look back on it a year from now I'm sure!

Re: I want to work for someone not myself?
Yes, owning a business is not for everyone -- and you are the only one who can decide what is best for you.
From my perspective; I have worked for employers for 20 plus years and 17 of them for two who I put my all into to "move up" only to be let go because they decided that they wanted to move my position out of my area.
That made my decision for me -- if I could put all that energy, time, and even tears into someone else's business I could do it for myself, for my business.
I am scared, scared we won't have the money we need -- but when my UI runs out, we won't -- so I said what am I really afraid of.
Think about what is concerning you really and if it is that you really don't want to own a business -- then go on with your arrangement and be happy knowing you are doing what's right for you.
Good luck no matter what you decide and we are here to help you however we can.

Collette,
It's been awhile since you have written this post. How do you feel now? It really resonated with me as that is how I am feeling right now. And the funny part is that I already own another business currently. But since I've been at my other business for 23 years I can do it in my sleep. This is brand new and is going to take some dedicated hard work to get up and going. Hopefully it will be worth it.

Is Collette still with us? Something that I keep in the back of my mind is that to really obtain anything of value sometimes you just have to "walk through the fire" to get to the other side. There's always a transition period that can be frightful for any new venture. But anything worth having is also worth working for. I'm having to learn all kinds of new things to get started that I don't need to use in my other business. So it's a real growth experience.

I understand where you're coming from, Collette. I love to create and am very good at it. But, business tasks, not so good. I go back and forth on how I want to approach my career in social marketing every few days.
As well as a fear of failure, I think I deal with a fear of success.

Re: I want to work for someone - not myself?
Thank you for checking back. This is why I love this industry.
I'm definitly getting more comfortable and have been approached by both of my clients that in the near future they would love to have me subcontract for them full-time. Since I started the post my daughter had to be put on a daily growth hormone shot, which is covered by my current insurance. So I told both clients the only way I could quit is if I can cover the health insurance premiums. So yes I'm getting past the fear of doing it on my own. Now it's just making sure I am covered within my budget.

Believe me I am right there with you. I have thought about this so much that my head hurts. I have taken a VA start program and got the certificate but still question where I will get the clients and how long it will take to get my business known.
My husband keeps telling me that I have to stay at my current nursing job even if this turns into a job money making job. The whole idea of the business is to get away from the current job. (Screams)

Re: What if I want to work for someone - not myself?
I rather think the question would be "Why Not Work for Myself". As already pointed out, there is really no job security anymore only limited income and personal time. The bottom line is going to work for someone else is a risk (pink slip, layoff, cut in hours). Don't be afraid of investing in yourself!
