Question A question on VA to VA working relationships and rates - please share your experiences
I am sort-of amazed at just how little a 'professional' VA will offer another [often 'new'] VA when setting her up to subcontract work from her. I'd like to know - in terms of subcontracting - what percentage do you feel is 'normal' for the hiring VA to take and what is normal for the VA sub to receive?

I just rec'd a note from a fellow member who is subbing through a supposedly 'reputable' assistant/client matching service and I was literally blown-away appalled at how little she was being paid. Even for data entry there is just a simple matter of respecting our fellow business owners and VAs for the work they do to help support OUR businesses.

So please, post up with your thoughts on what's a normal VA/Sub VA split. I'm wondering just how pervasive what I see as exreme underpayment is in our industry...

Great subject Tess!

When I sub out work I ask the sub what they would prefer to receive per hour & then add $5-10 (per hour) to that when submitting quote to client.

When I am the sub, I always offer my rates at the same $5-10 off per hour. I feel it is more than fair to both parties and shows a level of respect for each others position.

On a per project basis, I generally reduce my rates by 10-15%.

I'm curious to see what others do in this circumstance.

Hi Tess! I have not had to sub out yet, but I can tell you from the Subbie side that I have been paid on a 80/20 split, a 70/30 split and a 60/40 split. One VA told me that she would like to do a 90/10 split as she needed the money. Well I had to decline that offer.

I normally go about 10 dollars off my normal fee for a VA that I sub under.

When I've used subs in the past I've added $10/hr to their fee.

When working as a sub I used my normal hourly fee unless it was a BIG project and it would have been lost without both myself and the primary contact taking a little off the top.

I don't believe in underpaying subs. I have everyone who might possibly sub with me send me their prices. I also have them sign a sub-contractor agreement.

My policy is we are all professionals and should be treated that way - and treat others that way. Respect is the word of the day!

I haven't outsourced work yet, but I have accepted overflow work from fellow VA's at a reduced rate.

Great feedback so far, thanks for weighing in! I definitely understand the 'split' necessity, but in the case I came across [and numerous others in similar circumstances] that split just seemed unreasonably favored toward the hiring VA.

Rebecca, 90/10 is nuts - glad you walked away from that! Even 80/20 seems wrongly imbalanced to me. I think 60/40 at the maximum - or the other methods of calculation make more sense to me.

Looking forward to seeing this thread develop-thanks for jumping in so far!

Without going into too much detail I have never "hired" a VA but I have worked for others and I feel that it was always in my favor in fact the last time the client came to me and made me the offer.

Was the "client" the hiring VA?

I've always done the 75/25. Most of the work that I subcontract is bi-lingual work or backup phone work.
