As someone who is new to this field, what should I be doing as far as contracts and agreements. Should I always have a contract or wait until I build up clients. I currently have a new client that I am doing a project for on trust alone. Since he is my first client I wanted to get my name out there and let him see what I can do. Any suggestions, I want to protect myself while not discouraging clients.

You should have one prepared now as well as any other information that is essential that you need. There is tons of information on getting started and some great resources. You never know when your second client will come and you should be ready!

Good luck to you and welcome to the forum

You should have your contracts in place, or at the very least a letter agreement. Why would someone be discouraged by an agreement, unless they intended not to fulfill their end of the deal? Do you really want to work with that person? Contracts are a standard form of business practice and I wouldn't work with someone that refused to sign one.

Hi Carol

I completely understand where you're coming from, but you should always have a contract in place, or as Rebecka says a letter of agreement.

A contract is there to protect the interests of both you & the client - so don't look on it as a bad thing!

Hello,
As added insight I thought I'd mention that one of my former clients said one of the things that really reassured her about doing business with me was the professionalism of my contract.

Good luck,
Dawn

I am new at this also, but I would say that it's a little late in the project to drop a contract in this client's lap; however, for future reference, a contract is a basic part of doing business and any respectable client would not have a problem with a contract.

Carol~

Having an agreement is important at any phase of your business, and it goes beyond protecting yourself and your client. A well-done agreement will also outline what you expect of your clients and what they can expect from you - when expectations are clearly set, there is less chance of an unwanted misunderstanding.

I would also add that having a clearly defined client consultation and intake process has helped me build my business immensely. Prospects frequently compliment my process and appreciate that it shows them I have a business-owner mindset, which in the end shows them I understand how to help them improve their business.

Don't get overwhelmed, though. I started with a few simple items and they have evolved over the years to my current process and documents.

Warmly,

Lorri

I agree with everyone else on this subject! It is always good to cover yourself and your business with a contract. If the other party has an issue signing a contract then maybe it would not be a good idea to work with that person. After being burned a few times I will never work without a contract, or a letter of agreeement drawn up and signed.
