Re: What's the best way to track time?
I use myHours and love it. I have some people I subcontract for and they can view my time through the company tools and I have people who subcontract for me that I can view their time through my company tools. I love that I can go in and see what my subs are doing timewise at any time in the month.
FYI...I wrote a blog post on my very underutilized blog on myHours and setting it up. I've had some people find it useful. http://www.tayloredofficesolutions.com/blog/2006/11/

Re: What's the best way to track time?
I saw a mention of paymo.biz on that other thread mentioned in this one. Has anyone tried it? It looks like it might be pretty good and I'm trying to decide if I should sign up for myhours or paymo. Thanks!

Re: What's the best way to track time?
I've never tried MyHours, it sounds interesting. For years and years, I've been using TraxTime by Spud City - it's such a simple program to use and has great reporting features.
However, I'm not very disciplined and when I really get going, I sometimes forget to clock in. So, I also use something called 'Rescue Time' that is amazing as it tracks my computer usage - when I scan over the day, I get a good idea of what I've been working on so I can reverse engineer my logs. LOL
I also heard about Klok via social networking.

I think I'm going to try the myhours.com and see how that goes. I like having a notebook too though. I'm a list maker and there's nothing like a fresh new notebook to organize things.

Oh yes, I'm old fashioned - I have 2 big pads and two little ones for note taking. When I go back and review, if it's critical data - I save it into MS One Note.

Re: What's the best way to track time?
I found My Hours clunky and it was a pain to invoice with. I am using a customized program written for me that tracks time and produces invoices and it's web-based so I can access it from clients' offices. We're hoping that once it is converted to PHP (hosting for PHP is much more reasonable than JAVA) we'll be able to offer it on a subscription program at a low cost - probably $5.00 per month. I've been using it for a week now and everyday I thank my husband for wrting it for me. I was six months in the making (in his spare time) but was worth the wait. I've asked him if it's ready to go on an open source site yet, but he's not satisfied that it is. We still have to put the functionality for handling retainers, especially since I'm introducing a support program where people will be prepaying.

Julia, that program sounds great. And will be a great source of income for your family, well worth the six months I'd say Can't wait to see a link to check it out.

We're not sure it will generate much income. Our experience has been that people tend not to want to pay for stuff on the web - witness the extensive use of myhours.com even though it's not a great program (IMHO).

Re: What's the best way to track time?
Well Julia, I haven't yet tried to use MyHours but generally my feeling is you get what you pay for. And if you are not paying for it, there's a chance its really not that great.
If its difficult to use or doesn't work with extra featuers like your husband is working on for you, then people are only using because they haven't found the right product that does what they need at a price they can afford. Almost anyone would be able to afford a $5.00 a month subscription especially if what they are paying for makes their jobs easier and bill time less stressful.
I'd be happy to help out as a pilot user (with a very limited version) a small demo of sorts, just to see how user friendly it is. I serve on every pilot group at my work, testing out new software programs and troubleshooting for the IT team before they roll out the program to the whole firm. Just a thought. Sometime a fresh set of eyes can pick up on something that you can't because you've gotten so used it by working so intimately with it. Just let me know and good luck with it. You never know, it could be the next big thing. My friend is a progammer and has put together a software program for the cement foundation business that is in the works of being sold to a distributor big bucks looming in the future for her.

Re: What's the best way to track time?
You know I just reread that post and realized that I cannot type that well when my lab is barking at me from the other side of the room. He stands at the door and barks at me and the other littller dog who is always under my feet. I think he wants to play. I'll have to take his antics into consideration in thinking about where to set my work space up.
My dream is to grow this business so big, I can afford to set up an office somewhere else and have it be my own.

Thanks for the offer. Right now it's only set up for one user or account, so that's something that has to be added in. When we get it to a product stage, I'll be looking for people to try it out. It still needs work, but I'm pleased with it.

Oooh, I wish my hubby did Java and PHP - I have to settle for 3D modelling, LOL
Keep us posted! If a product is really good and saves me time, I don't care how much it costs. I've had UReach for 8 years! LOL

Re: What's the best way to track time?
Here is a great tip.... There are many programs out there "freeware" not shareware. There are several programs that keep track of your time for free....... I currently use "Time Manager"

My feeling on freeware is that you get what you pay for. I don't use any free programs - I used myhours.com for about 8 or 9 months until I got tired of it and wanted something better (which proved my point about getting what you pay for). I'll download free trials but if I like the product, I'll pay for it.
