Default Voice Recognition Software
Does anyone use voice recognition software? I have a client asking me to do some research to see what is considered good and inexpensive (free is even better). Something that is easily downloaded from the internet preferably.

Does anyone use one?

Thanks.

I have used ViaVoice (cheap) and Dragon Naturally Speaking (expensive). It appears "you get what you pay for" is true in this case. It took 6 months to get ViaVoice to a 80% recognition - it took 6 weeks to get Dragon to a 98% recognition. Obviously, I recommend Dragon. Just be prepared that it takes a pretty serious commitment to "train" it to each individual voice.

I used to do a lot of internet market research and writing reports would wear out my wrists and thumbs so I used the speech tools that come installed with Windows XP Pro. It helped me greatly. Sometimes I simply could not physically type anymore so I would just dictate my reports. Granted, it was slow going but it saved me a lot of pain. I found that as long as I spoke clearly and slowly the speech recognition was no problem.

Hmmm, thanks for the tips. I think he wants to record interviews so it would need to be able to recognize more than one voice. Probably won't work in this case.

Thanks.

You think Vista might have this? I would not know where to even begin to look.

Hi Lisa,

I googled this for you and it seems that Vista does have this. However, you might want to view some of the Youtube vids and read some info before you decide to try it. Google: vista speech recognition

Alternatively you can read this http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/w.../aa905128.aspx

Good luck!
