Default Very Basic Accounting Software Needed
I have a client who needs VERY basic software... just something to record payments from clients (i.e., AP and AR is all we need). She doesn't yet collect HST. Is there an online (preferably free) system that anyone would recommend? Thanks!

Hi Sharon,

Why not try Quickbooks Easy Start? It is supposed to be fairly basic and free:

There is also Microsoft Office Accounting which is also free, but it looks like they have discontinued distributing this as of November 2009.

HTH!

You could also create in Excel a spreadsheet that does exactly what she needs. Which is probably the most simple thing to do.

If it's that basic then yes a spreadsheet should be fine but I use Xero - it's cloud computing so can be accessed anywhere. Worth a look.

I use freshbooks to track time and payments its great and you can generate reports with it. Without it my billing would be a mess.

I recommend going to Youtube, type in "Simple Accounting Program," scroll down the first page of results until you see the video that looks like a cartoon and click on it.

I agree that Quickbooks easy start would be a good starting point. There are several simple accounting applications with Google apps as well that would fit your needs.

I would definitely recommend QuickBooks Simple Start 'cuz your client can send their numbers directly from that program to their accountant at year end for tax purposes. They can also upgrade easily to QB Pro down the road (if they choose to) without having to re-enter all of their data.

I have the QBSS 2010 free version .exe on my computer so feel free to pm me if you can't find it online and I'll send it to you.
