Default Screen Capture Tool for Windows Vista Users
Hi Everyone,
I recently learned of a free screen capture tool that is included with Windows Vista. I know other screen capture programs have been mentioned here such as Screenhunter, SnagIt and Jing- all of which have tons of great benefits.

I just thought I'd mentioned this one which is easily available if you have Vista, which means you don't have to download anything to have access to this simple little tool. It's called the "Snipping Tool". If you click on the Start Button and then type in "Snipping Tool" it will come up for you.

It allows you to select a specific area either free form or rectangular, do a window snip or a screen snip. You can also add a colored border (red is the default) or no border at all. Once you snip it opens in another window where you can save it in several different formats such as .jpg, you can email it to someone, and you can draw on it with colors or use the "highlighter" to highlight something.

It seems like a great little feature that many of us already have and if you're like me, you didn't even know it!

Thanks for mentioning it here on the forum Kim. I actually came across it a couple weeks ago made a note to add it to a previous forum on Screen Capture Tools/Programs but haven't gotten to it yet. It's number 8904687 on my list.

Everyone it's a great, free, readily available tool to Vista users. Try it out!!

Thanks, I've been on Snag-It's 30 day free trial - I'm glad you told me about this before I paid $50.00 for it!

Thanks for sharing

Does the snipping tool do a 'video capture' like snag-it? I use this feature when I am learning a new software program through online training...

Hi Lily,
I don't think the tool does a "video capture" if you mean that will it record actual video. It will allow you to take a screen shot of what's currently on there, but it would just be an image. I think maybe Screenhunter or Jing might be able to do what you are interested in.

I've been using snippit today and it's a bit clunky compared to Snag It. I like the magnification aspect when getting the corners. I had to re-do a couple of captures with the Vista version so I'll probably buy Snag-It.

Yes, I agree it's a very basic tool. Other software that has been mentioned on this forum has many more bells and whistles. It's good try it out so that you know if you need to get something additional or to see if it will work for your needs.

Julia,
I'd really appreciate it if you'd be willing to post a thorough overview of SnagIt and some it's more relevant features.

I use SnagIt a lot! I have the default set to 'video capture' but if I press 'print screen' to start the video and then stop it immediately I can save just 1 frame as a screen shot.

We are involved with a lot of Webex presentations and I also do online software training so I use SnagIt in video mode to replay the presentations/trainings for future reference. I found a free version of SnagIt; it just doesn't have quite as many whistles and bells as the newer version does.
