Default Recommendation for Graphics Software
Hi

I'm looking for some recommendations for graphics software, I use gimp but would like to know about other software that are reasonably priced. Adobe would be ideal but its expensive.

Many Thanks

I currently use Adobe CS4 and yes it can be expensive but I was a student and I got is for a quarter of what it is selling for in stores. Here is a thread that has some great Free sites and software lists that you might find useful.

Actually - without going for photoshop - I use gimp. It's the best I can find, free, and has most of the things you can do on Photoshop, and yet for me, isn't as complicated. For really really simple photo editing I also use Picnik online.

Thanks Andrea for the links I knew there were some thread but couldn't find.

Michelle gimp is good and I probably need to spend some more time exploring it, I've been using it for basic stuff.

I've been using Photoshop Express, which came with my computer, and to be honest, i don't know how much the program costs. But it's surely cheaper than Photoshop, and does everything I need (so far) very nicely.

Photoshop Elements is a good compromise and does almost everything that the basic Photoshop user does. I've seen it priced on the Internet for between $50 to $75. The only thing it doesn't do that I wish it did was to convert to CMYK which is helpful/necessary for sending files to printshop. However, I have an older version and I'm thinking they may have added this capability to the newest version.

Also, Xara is a good, simple tool. It's very easy to use, simple to navigate, and a bit fun. I use it for those images that don't require me to use photoshop (i.e. web buttons, etc.), but it's capable of much more.

Photoshop Elements is a good program, so I agree with Kimberly. If you look at the round logo for holisticat.com, I designed a good share of that with PE, but then upgraded to Photoshop CSx because I wanted to be able to do more.

Not to toot my horn too loud, I was approached by PE to feature that logo in their Elements publication (great place to learn a lot! http://www.photoshopelementsuser.com...FQ_yDAodGF7__A) with instructions on how I did it, but because I finished it off using PS CSx, I didn't think it fair to be featured as a PE graphic.

So yup, Photoshop Elements can do a lot more than just edit photos. Software Surplus (https://www.softwaresurplus.com/Guar...ory_Code=Adobe) has version 5 for $39.95 (current version is 7; could upgrade if you like the program), so that may be a less expensive option.

HTH a bit,

I like paint.net (www.paint.net). I actually use a combination of paint and photoshop while working 'cuz I can do some of the fancier stuff w/photoshop (like curving words along a squiggle path or using the quick selection tool) but paint is soooo much easier and does just about everything else.

Ran across this post today that might be helpful if you want to use free stuff other than Gimp and aren't ready to jump right in and pay for some software.
