Default Online Database
Hi Friends,

I'm looking for an online contact database that will allow me to have custom fields that I can run reports on (i.e., contact details for everybody that attended a particular event.)

We've used Access and Excel pivot tables in the past but the clients are not tech-savvy and want something simple that the can access from anywhere.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

Have you tried Zoho, Kimberly? It's not free (except to get started), but don't know how much off the top of my head.

Hi Jules,

Zoho is great - I thought it was exactly what I was looking for but it won't let me run reports on "Multi Select" field(s) so if I want to know who attended the event in 2009 but not 2010 - it won't work. Unfortunately, that is the type of data I need.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Kimberly, have you tried FileMaker Pro? It's a very flexible software program - and I think you can share across the Internet, too.

Jules,

I think we are going to make Zoho Creator work. I played with it a bunch this weekend and think I found a way to do it.

Thanks for your input and I will let you know how it goes.

Great Kimberly, do let me know how it goes. Have fun!

One other thing I thought of is using Crystal Reports to create custom reports from a database since you mentioned Access and Excel at one point. In the past I used this to pull data from MAS90, an accounting program, to create a ton of different custom reports I wanted to manage employee 401(k) reporting, created sales tax reports (corporation had multiple locations in two states and different tax rates), and numerous other reports.

Hi Jules,
did you take a class on Crystal Reports? Or is it easy for a programmer to learn just by buying the program and tinkering with it?

No, I didn't take a class, Roy, I learned it by trial and error, so tinkering with it was the way I went. To me, it wasn't that hard to learn. Our reseller for our accounting program (MAS90 at the time, which came bundled with CR) wanted to know how I learned it and then wanted me to teach classes on it (too much on my plate so I couldn't). I don't consider myself a "programmer" per se, but it does help to have some knowledge as to how databases work and where to "grab" the data from in the tables. MAS90's tables are not user-named friendly, so that was quite fun to figure out. Plus, there were hundreds of tables!

I love CR! Have fun if you buy the program!
