Default Micosoft Office Suite substitute
Can anyone suggest a substitute for Office Suite besides Works.
I cannot afford Micosofts heavy price tag at this time. I had it on my windows XP but that computer died and I cannot justify the expense at this time for my new Vista computer.

Try the Open Office suite (http://www.openoffice.org). It even allows you to work with MS Office files ;-)

I agree about openoffice. If you have children or are in college you can get the academic pricing for all Office products which is much less then retail price.

I hate to be a wet blanket, but if you cannot afford the basic tools for running your business, why are you even in it? Re the student versions of of Office, please understand that if you are using that version for a business, you are breaking terms of the license agreement.

Julia,

Things happen, people often need free versions to get them by just like Linda. Please do not alienate with the good ole "if you cannot afford it..." routine.

Perhaps you have never been through a time like Linda is eluding to - however, I have. In fact I lost a 360 g harddrive and it was more important to get myself up and running and pay for my machine than the extra software I "used" to have (no they could not get anything off the harddrive and it corrupted my offline backup).

I am glad you have been lucky - or well funded.

I'd also like to add that there is no shame in using open-source programs. A lot of them are fabulous.

I have used OpenOffice on a portable thumb drive when I work remotely. It works well. Also Gimp is a great Photoshop substitute. You can download a trial version of Office2007 for 60 days. Maybe you can put enough aside to get a standard version which is $399.

OpenOffice is a great substitute.

A piece of advice though never buy a Microsoft product at full price you can nearly always get good deals on their website.

If you are any kind of college student you can get their full office 2007 suite for about £39/$59 at http://www.microsoft.com/student/dis...s/default.aspx. They have this offer for various countries.

They had a special offer on in December on their website where it was available for £89 so its always worth rechecking the site on a regular basis. Office 2007 is an incredible suite and really does save time with it's enhanced functionality.

Before buying any products you should always comparison shop. I do this often and have found that many stores will not price match. Note however, that some will only use brick and mortars while others will use internet prices. Also, internet pricing is sometimes better then getting it from brick and mortar.

I found that you should use the resources that you have available to you and "upgrade" when funds and business allows.

My son's school uses Open Office for their wordprocessing. Much like Microsoft Office products.
