Default Great tool for authors/writers who create indexes
I just got the opportunity to test out this new tool called INDXR. It's free and I absolutely love it!

My 9-5 boss is writing a book that is currently 14 chapters (and counting). When the book is complete, we will need to generate a table of contents and a full index for it. Any of you who have ever had to insert code for an index in MS Word knows how incredibly time consuming this process is from start to finish. Hence, this great little piece of software!

A co-worker had previously inserted code in a project that was approximately the size of Chapter 2 - it took her nearly 3 hours just to enter the code. I ran Indxr on Chapter 2 and it took less than a minute! Just for grins, I then ran the program on the partially completed draft (147 pages of text); it took 13 minutes.

O.k., the results: Indxr coded ALL of the nouns and none of the verbs. I will need to go through and remove some of the codes. BUT - compare that to ADDING all of the code and we are talking mere minutes in comparison.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this piece of software! I'm going to keep an eye out on the developer's website (http://www.chrisgreaves.com) as he is working on some other software pieces that appear to be just as useful for anyone who works with MS Word or Excel.

Thanks for posting this. I've been trying to figure out how to do this with my client who is writing her grandmother's memoirs and really had no idea where to even start with a Table of Contents or Index. (We are up to 340 pages at the moment not including all of the pics and additional pages that will eventually be inserted and she refuses to take any of my editing suggestions that might help pare it down a bit). I'll have to play around with it a bit to see how it works. One question, though, what do you mean by "coding". Are you mainly talking about ebooks where you can click on a link and it'll take you directly to that spot? Will this work for books that will only be printed? Don't mean to sound dense but this is all new to me and I desperately want the knowledge

Indxr is designed for MS Word. When you create a table of contents, table of figures, index, etc. you have to insert into the document where all of these items are located. In other words, you have to add 'code' for MS Word to be able to generate the TOC or Index. Ex:

CHAPTER ONE
What is Motivational Interviewing

INTRODUCTION

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a style of communicating that helps people to explore and resolve ambivalence about changing specific, maladaptive behaviors.

Becomes

CHAPTER ONE{∙TC∙"CHAPTER∙ONE∙-∙What is Motivational Interviewing?" ∙\f∙C∙\I∙"1"∙}{∙XE∙"CHAPTER ONE"∙}
What is Motivational Interviewing{∙XE∙"Motivational Interviewing"∙}?

INTRODUCTION{∙TC∙"Introduction"∙"∙\f∙C∙\I∙ "2"∙}{∙XE∙"Introduction"∙}

Motivational Interviewing {∙XE∙"Motivational Interviewing"∙} (MI) is a style of communicating {∙XE∙"communicating"∙}that helps people to explore and resolve ambivalence {∙XE∙"ambivalence"∙}about changing specific, maladaptive behaviors{∙XE∙"maladaptive behaviors"∙}.

The TC codes are for the Table of Contents - to add these, highlight the word(s) you want in the TOC and press ALT-SHFT-O to open the coding box. The XE codes are for the index. You will still have to hand-pick and code the TOC, BUT the indexing code is done FOR you by Indxr.

When you consider that ALMOST EVERY SINGLE WORD in your document has to be SELECTED BY HAND for both the TOC and the Index, you can see how incredibly time consuming (not to mention boring ) it is to code these docs. And, of course, the bigger the doc, the longer the time it takes.

So, as I said, you STILL need to select and code the TOC by hand BUT - Indxr will enter ALL of the XE codes for you in a matter of minutes. Then, you simply go through and clean up the coding rather than building it from scratch. Awesome, eh?

I've been playing with it (love it, love it, love it!) and found some new info that allows me to tweak the indexed list at http://indxr.ca/NextSteps.htm. Hope this helps even more!
