Question Excel 2007 question
Maybe my memory fails me, but IIRC, in the previous version of Excel, when I cut or copied a graphic that was in a cell & then went to paste it into a new cell, the graphic was positioned in the same location within the cell, as where it was in the original cell.

In the new version, Excel places the graphic in the top left corner of the cell. This is causing me untold extra work to reposition all the graphics to the same location. Arghh!

I've searched Help & can't find a way to copy the graphic to the same location within the cell.

Are there any Excel gurus out there who know the solution to this? I would be very appreciative.

Try turning off the "snap-to" options?

Turn off the snap-to options

1. Click the shape or object (object: A table, chart, graphic, equation, or other form of information. Objects created in one application, for example spreadsheets, and linked or embedded in another application are OLE objects.) in the worksheet.
2. Under Drawing Tools on the Format tab, in the Arrange group, click Align.

If you do not see the Drawing Tools or Format tabs, make sure that you selected a shape or an object. You may need to double-click the object to open the tabs.

3. Depending on which options are selected click Snap to Grid or Snap to Shape to disable these options.

Thanks for your suggestion, Christina. I had high hopes that it was the solution, but alas, it is not. I've been all over the web this morning & still cannot find a way to make this work.

I guess I'll have to adjust all the graphics manually.

Lesly,

Is it all in one workbook? If yes, did you try linking it? Here's what I found:

Pictures that you insert from a file are embedded (embed: To insert information created in one program, such as a chart or an equation, into another program. After the object is embedded, the information becomes part of the document. Any changes you make to the object are reflected in the document.) in your worksheet or presentation. You can reduce the size of a file by linking (link: Used to insert a copy of information created in one program into a Microsoft Word document while maintaining a connection between the two files. When the information changes in the source file, the changes are reflected in the destination document.) to a picture instead. In the Insert Picture dialog box, click the picture that you want to insert, click the arrow next to Insert, and then click Link to File.

Hope this helps.

Carol

Hi Lezly - Christina tipped me off (on Twitter) that you had a question - can you give me more details as to what you are doing and how you are doing it?

1. Are you using a .jpg or .png or are you using insert a shape from the toolbar?
2. What steps are you taking to insert/copy the file (give me as many details as you can as I'm a visual person and will be trying to replicate what you are doing in my Excel).

Michelle :-)

Oh thanks, Michelle. It's a project for a previous boss who I hope will send some work my way when I'm up & running in January.

The graphics are small, avatar sized gif files. Initially I inserted one graphic using the Insert > Picture command. Excel placed the gif in the upper left hand corner, so I moved it to the center of the cell. I then selected the centered gif & copied it. Then I placed the cursor in a new cell & pasted the gif into it. Excel '07 pastes the gif in the upper left corner, not in the same location of the new cell as where it was in the old cell.

I'm almost certain in the old version of Excel, when I would copy the gif & paste it into a new cell, the gif would paste into the same location of the cell as where the copied gif was in the old cell. This made it very easy to have all the graphics placed in exactly the same spot for every cell.

I'm almost done adjusting them manually, but I would love a solution for this problem for the future! Any help or suggestions you can provide will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for the additional info - I take it your cells are pretty big if you are trying to center the pictures?

About how big do you think the pictures are?

The cells are about one inch square. The graphic is the little green recycle logo. It's 48px x 48px & 541 bytes.

I wonder if the cell itself was formatted. Then you can use the Painter tool to paint the format from one cell to another.

HTH

Cheers!!

Oh I so wish I knew - I even looked on the community for a similar type of question to no avail.

I know a ton about Excel but have worked very little with pasting/inserting pix into it! So this is an unknown area for me.
