Default Dental Services - which software to use for secure remote access?
I was considering adding Dental to my list of services. It has been my current job for over 4 years, so I'm pretty well versed in it. I don't want it to be my "niche" per se, just another service to offer.
Services like electronic claim submission, insurance followup, electronic attachments, etc. The only thing is, I would want to remote-in to the clients computer, and use their existing software, and not have to purchase any software myself. (I don't even know if it's possible anyway, because all of our software is attached to the specific doctors)

Do you have clients that you remote in to their computers? How do you make sure its secure? I'd have to worry about keeping people's info safe because of HIPAA. Any Ideas?? Thanks!! Nicole

I agree that HIPAA may be your limiting factor here. As far as remoting in, you might be able to use software along the lines of:

Citrix
NoMachine (NX)
Remote Desktop
Hamachi
GoToMyPC
VNC over SSH
PCAnywhere

Those are all of the ones I can think of, and I have not used them all, nor do I endorse their security. They all serve roughly the same purpose in that they either attach you to a new session on the remote computer (NX, Remote Desktop, Citrix), or they directly allow you to control an already existing session on someone's screen (VNC).

You may check with the companies you are seeking to work for, as often some one of these solutions is used already and could be made available to you without major changes to their systems.

Hello Nicole - this is right up my alley. I actually provide virtual dental consulting services. First, you MUST have a SECURE hosting/email. The use of hotmail, for example, won't cut it. Secondly, it may depend on what the practice uses to allow you access to their PMS. For example, one of my clients uses GoToMyPC - it's free for me, but does cost him since he has various people who use it (himself offsite, his bookkeeper, etc.) to login to his computers. When I login I can access any of his computers not just one. The other consideration to keep in mind is your knowledge with various PMS. If you're versed with lets say, EagleSoft and not Dentrix or Softdent it may pose a problem for you learning the ropes of their PMS. Since I've been in the field over 20 years I have knowledge of various PMS' so I'm fortunate and if I haven't used a particular PMS then I typically know someone who has with my connections.

Feel free to PM or email me anytime if I may be of assistance.

Good luck!
