Default BOOK REVIEW - Step by Step, Word 2010
Step by Step, Word 2010
by Joyce Cox and Joan Lambert

This title starts at an introductory level of Microsoft Word 2010 and advances to a comfortable intermediate level. Practice files are available for downloading from the web.

The book is divided into three key sections. The first segment, titled, "Basic Word Documents" targets the novice Word user. Covered are topics like creating and entering text, how to move around in the document, how to format text, paragraphs, lists, columns and tabbed lists, how to insert simple graphic elements, and how to preview, print and distribute documents.

The second section of the book, "Document Enhancements," covers slightly more advanced document features such as creating and modifying diagrams and charts, adding other visual elements such as watermarks, symbols, equations, organizing and arranging content, and creating docs for use outside of Word, including saving files in different formats, viewing the docx format, and how to create and publish blog posts.

It's in the final section, "Additional Techniques," where more advanced features of Word are covered. The tools used to manage long documents are covered, including, footnotes, endnotes, table of contents, tables of authorities, and indexes. Those who have never performed a mail merge will find this chapter clear and concise, with a good explanation about how the data source and the main document work together and how to create both. Collaboration of documents is covered, including digital signatures, adding and reviewing comments, tracking and managing document changes, merging documents and password protecting documents. The final chapter addresses how to work in Word more efficiently using styles and templates, default program options and how to change them and how to customize the ribbon and quick access tool bar.

The book ends with a glossary and a brief section that lists common Word keyboard shortcuts. This section also includes instructions on how to create your own keyboard shortcuts, for tasks that you perform repeatedly. I love keyboard shortcuts and enjoyed this section the most of all.

The layout of Step by Step, Word 2010 is clean and well organized. There are lots of screen shots which are always helpful in 'how to' software books. Each chapter ends with a 'key points' section. Scattered throughout the book, are 'sidebars,' a blocked area of content that provides concise and specific info on one particular feature or topic.

Pros

1. The first half of this book targets novice Word users. Those users, who work through this book, will advance to a comfortable intermediate level.

Cons

1. Intermediate to advanced Word users could use the second half of this book as a reference, however, I the first 200 pages of the book will rarely be referenced by this level of user.

Overall, Laserdog gives this book 2 wags of the tail.

The first edition of this book was published in June 2006 and has 528 pages. The price of the book is $19.79. Click here to buy the book.

Lezly,

I suspect you won't get many comments because most current and potential VAs are probably well versed in Word, but it sounds like it would make a good reference if someone didn't want it and offered it to you.

Thank you, Dognose. Good review. I especially apprecfiace the pros and cons. Another source for those who are self taught or needing extra help is "Teach Yourself Visually". These books are written for MS office software, and each book has a different author(s). They are available for 2010. I purchased one for MS Office 2003. It is in full color and very easy for us visual types to follow step by step.
