Audacity - We use Audacity to help manage sound file editing, transcriptions, file conversion, and the like. Can't be beat for fast, free, easy to use sound file management.

Has simple point and click selection of 'sections' of your sound file for easy editing, as well as speed control for those harder to edit areas.

This thread has been dormant on the site for far too long - this is by far one of the coolest free programs out there for sound file management, editing, etc. and is great for transcription too...check it out!

I don't use it as often any more because I've stopped doing transcription but it is still so useful to me for cleaning up sound files.

If you have a client who does teleseminars or interviews etc. there are always chunks of silence that need to be 'cut out' or fuzzy bits that need to be clarified before publishing the show to the web - Audacity lets you do all of that and more with a couple of clicks. Easy!

Audacity is a GREAT program and I endorse it as well. Right now it is the only audio editing program I use, for clients and also for my podcast.

It is easy to use too. There are many things you can do with the program like Tess already mentioned. I like the fact that you can increase or decrease the sound, add fade ins/out and save as either a .wav or .mp3. For a free program there really is a lot of functionality.

I recently purchased a microphone that came with audio editing/recording software. I played around with the new software a bit, but most definately prefer to use Audacity.
