Default Accounting software for Mac - recommendations?
For years I have been using the Windows version of the free software Simple Start from Quick Books. It has been wonderful and I enjoy using it, however it does have limitations - such as only being allowed 20 Clients (so I use Miscellaneous a lot!) and I believe they are discontinuing it. I feel I should really take the plunge into something that is preferably based on my Mac and without the restrictions.

I do not have employees and don't accept credit card payments (although if I have to pay for a program and it includes this option it may be useful), plus I don't claim GST/tax (Australia). I just need a basic program that records income and expenses, raises invoices and provides the necessary reports for my accountant at tax time. Some of the programs I've seen cost hundreds of dollars, so I thought I would see if anyone here has any recommendations for Mac Accounting software?

Many thanks,

Hi Marie,

I use Freshbooks on my Mac but I'm not sure if it has all the bells and whistles you're looking for. They have a free version so you can try it out and see.

Mac seems to be a difficult one to find accounting software for. I also run a Mac and am looking for the best option. I've been researching, but haven't come to any solid conclusion yet.

Sadly everything seems to be overkill or too expensive. It must be one of the few downfalls of Mac. I've asked on other forums also but the 'free' stuff can be a bit bland (no ability to customise invoices and insert logo etc) or just a trick to say free and then you have to pay later. *sigh*. Will keep searching. I'm trying to avoid an online system to prevent problems with ISP/hosting etc (the old time site I used was ALWAYS down on the 1st day of the month when I needed to do billing!). I may have to check it out though. Some suggested programs show promise, but they are only invoicing and tracking - they don't have ability to record business expenses (that aren't chargeable to a client) and produce a profit & loss report. I think I just have to bite the bullet and look at the 'big names' and pay the big $$. Will report back on what I end up purchasing! :-)

I have been using Wave Accounting. It's online, free to use and quite adaptable. It will import transactions and works with any computer since it's online. I've never had concerns about security and like the easy access to it.

You can also connect it with Google Docs, Paypal and Freshbooks. Another nice feature is you can also track personal expenses and accounting if you choose.
