Default Re: Phone Service with No Land Line
I use Google Voice for my business number. It's on my cell phone and I have a custom message that I change up every couple weeks. I don't answer the phone if I'm working, business or personal. That's what voice mail is for.

I've only got two potential clients right now, but when talking to friends and colleagues I asked how many would be bothered by getting a message, as long as I'm clear upfront about my policy, there are other, better ways to reach me quickly. Not one, including the CEO of a Fortune 500 co (my husband's employer) had a problem with it. In fact, most said they didn't like wasting time on calls unless they were scheduled.

I've never felt obligated to answer the phone if I'm busy. I used to take call for a previous employer (eye doctor) a couple times a year. I just forwarded the office phone to my cell and answered all calls as if I was the business if the number came up unknown. No one new any different. So if the extra $$ isn't in the cards, or a free service doesn't work and you want to sound professional, answer as your business, and don't tell people it's your personal number.

I have Straight talk home phone and it works great. Unlimited us calls. Set up is a 1 time $99.00 and a monthly 15.00 fee to keep it going.

I use RingCentral's office plan. When I am busy working on client projects I let the calls go to voicemail. If I am available then I answer the line. After hours calls go to voicemail. If a client needs to reach me after hours they leave a VM. I get a text & email that I have a new VM. I listen to the VM and if I feel it is necessary I return the call that night, if not it waits until the next business day.

I currently use GoogleVoice (FREE) for my phone and can forward to cell or home. I also use my cell for mobile purposes and HelloFax for faxing... Ive never heard of OneBox... I'll have to check that out!! You can use Skype, but for me it hogs one of my ports on the computer so I only use it when needed.

I see a lot of you are using Google Voice. Last year I signed up for a phone number and tested it with a couple college students and both of them said I had an echo. However, when I would call them back on my cell phone (which is where the Google Voice forwards to) they could hear me fine. I'm worried to use this with clients, so I'm wondering if anyone else has had this issue? Were you able to fix it?

I use Google Voice and have for some time I don't have the echo issue on my cell phone. Maybe go to Google Voice's forum and see if anyone else has had the same issue.

I use Google Voice as well, but only on my cell phone. I love the voicemail transcripts... even though they are usually poor quality. They make me laugh - like talk to text. Sometimes the message just doesn't make any sense!

Christy, when you had the echo, were you using your computer's microphone? I don't understand what you meant.

Thanks VA's for the helpful comments. I'm on a budget so will begin using Google voice. Sounds like Google has great setup options to choose from - plus it's free.
