Default Twitter - Clueless
I know what Twitter is, but have no idea how to use it or how it could help me in marketing. Does anyone know of a good (preferably free) tutorial on how to best utilize Twitter? I had a link to one some time ago but have not been able to locate it. Thanks!

I don't have a link for you but my best advice is to just dive in. Follow people who are thought leaders in your area of expertise. You can get books at the library but sometimes they are overwhelming.

If you just Google twitter, you'll get a ton of information. But just expect to initally feel clumsy but you'll be tweeting in no time. And remember that social media is social so tweet a favorite blog post of a friend or tweet a positive link to an important issue. It's all about give and take.

Have you checked YouTube for free tutorials? Have you googled 'How to use Twitter' or 'Twitter 101'...there's lots out there.

Jan gives great advice. Figure out who you want to target and set up your profile toward that market. Then Tweet with a variety of information that people will respond to.

Thanks. I have googled how to use Twitter. I guess I thought there would be a better "how to" out there somewhere. Diving right in and learning as I go I guess is the best way.

I too have to get started on twitter. My question is, if I follow people in my niche (PC's) wont they realize i'm new and see me as an amateur? Do I follow other VA's as well? under my biz name or my personal name?

Beatrice -

I have to ask you a question back regarding your first question. How would they see you as an amateur unless you present yourself as an amateur? Perhaps you are referring to the fact that you won't have very many followers? That should not be a problem, if that is the case. Your content and presentation of yourself will be what matters.

A very, very wise woman (my business coach) told me that people will not ask if I am the expert, if I believe and present myself as the expert. She was soooo right. Things changed for me after that little nugget.

Also...you definitely should network and follow other VA's. We are a supportive community as a whole.

As far as as your business or personal - I think I will let Twitter experts handle that question. I personally don't mess around much with Twitter.

Hope that at least helps somewhat.

I usually tweet about a favorite song, artist, a new blog, an update to my website, or some special event.

Something nice to tweet is that The Brainy Gal sent you a great free Twitter download which is great publicity for her and gets people to click the link to the download within your tweet. Thus, they will 'follow' you given that you are supplying useful information.

Yes, all the replies are very helpful to me as well. I've wanted to jump in to Twitter but didn't know how either. I will certainly cater my profile to my niche market so that I can find PCs.

Thanks!

Hi everyone! I just wanna chime in and days that Lisa book would be very helpful. About a month and a half I dove into the Twitter pool. The most empowering thing I've learned so far is that there are a ton of different ways to approach a Twitter strategy and ten times as many tools available to manage each different aspect. It really seems there is a method for each individual business or person and a lot of it depends on what works best for you and what resources you want to dedicate to it. I like to play Youtube videos in the background while I work during the day. Not everyone is going to be that interested but you can find people that fit what you are looking for pretty easily. Even if you don't get 100% of what they are saying you can play it again later. At first I was just as confused and perplexed as to how I could possibly gain anything. It was really frustrating to tweet to the abyss. Once I got the very basics down it actually got super fun. I'm currently using it mostly to network. I've actually already met some people that could certainly be potential clients in the future many of which live in the area I'm moving to in January. It only took about 5 weeks for me to get 1000 followers but if I were to do it all over again I would have taken things more slowly to target people more carefully. Over the last couple weeks I've started to get much more into analytics. That has been really fun because I can see much more information about what people are attracted to me and the services I offer. Sorry if I got rambly, but to be honest it does sort of make me incredibly giddy that all these tools are readily available for anyone, no matter your current knowledge, to reach such a huge and well targeted audience. Anywho, I would read as much as you like, and just dive in. Its really not as confusing as it all sounds Best of luck in your adventures in the Twitterverse.
