For those who have a good following on Social Media sites, what do you talk about? Most people are heavy on the quotes, but when it comes to content that engages your audience and promotes your business, what are you talking about?

I do a few things on FB and Twitter. I'll ask questions. For example, on a Monday, I might ask people what their biggest challenge is for the coming week. Or, I'll ask if people have hear/responded to a current issue (FB changing your email address, etc). I will also share relevant content from other companies I follow, with a comment added. It's like you said: Interaction and engagement are key. Just posting won't be enough. There are some free webinars out there that might be helpful.

Kate- Those are some great ideas! I'll have to try out asking more questions. I've been trying to get my hand on all the Twitter guides I can get my hands on I keep chugging along trying to find out all I can. I tend to have more personal conversations with people initially until I know how I can help them better. Recently I started to use an analytic tool for twitter reports(Chrome app called "Socialbro) . I'm actually having a lot of fun seeing the stats on what my followers tend to talk about. The plan is to use the information to figure out how to more effectively directly connect with people. I'm hoping this will make my tweets more relevant. Otherwise I look through the feed and try to be as helpful and friendly as I can . Sometimes I look at what is being retweeted. When I get new jobs I also tweet what I like about the new project.

I do a little of everything: ask questions, share information, add quotes. However, each account (Twitter, FB and LI) have different content. The only time a share "across the board" is for blog posts and vital information. I try to promote my followers big new items such as awards, accomplishments or accolades.

Thanks guys, great info. All great ideas. I do many of the things you mentioned, but I always try to ask around to see whats working for others. I normally use my account to test ideas for client accounts, so it can look a little wacky at times.

I balance my updates between sharing links to articles and posts I find informative, retweeting great stuff, promoting my own posts and services and then I add just a touch of personal stuff so that my followers feel they are getting to know me, not just my business.

These have been great suggestions! I sometimes struggle with what content to share as well. I do post different information on each platform so that I can encourage my followers and fans to connect to all of the accounts to get different information but some things I do share across the board. I also ask questions but so far I haven't gotten many comments. So I'm working on encouraging others to comment by responding to what other pages post. It's starting to work on Facebook; now I have to get interaction on Twitter as well.
