I have to ask you a question back regarding your first question. How would they see you as an amateur unless you present yourself as an amateur? Perhaps you are referring to the fact that you won't have very many followers? That should not be a problem, if that is the case. Your content and presentation of yourself will be what matters.
A very, very wise woman (my business coach) told me that people will not ask if I am the expert, if I believe and present myself as the expert. She was soooo right. Things changed for me after that little nugget.
Also...you definitely should network and follow other VA's. We are a supportive community as a whole.
As far as as your business or personal - I think I will let Twitter experts handle that question. I personally don't mess around much with Twitter.
