This type of oversight is particularly interesting in regards to teenage girls who now days seem to think less than ladylike behavior is attractive, comical and innocent. However, perception is EVERYTHING (to someone else at least) and I would prefer my reputation to proceed me in a good way!

I recently warned a former co-worker that current and future employers now check Facebook. Apparently her boyfriend had gotten hold of her phone and was sending completely inappropriate status updates via her Facebook. Like someone said in an earlier post, when you are hired by a company, regardless of your position, you are the face of that company. To post information about your escapades and drinking habits is completely irresponsible.

I agree that you need to be careful what information you put out there about yourself. Another thing to consider is what others put out there about you. For example on Facebook, a friend of mine put pictures of me and others (and tagged us) up on her page during our Europe trip in high school. Now while I have nothing to hide, it originally took me by surprise. At the time, I was new to FB and didn't know about tagging and such. Since those pictures brought back great memories, I'm happy to have them up.

I can say that I have no pictures out there I would shame/embarrass me. I am happy however, that the latest FB update included the ability to remove tags of others and given me the choice of who sees content about me. I don't approve of potential employers, etc., requiring access to candidates profiles, but I also don't think that's going to change.

I am careful what I put out there, who has access to info about me and frequently run a search on myself, just in case. I love technology and it's my reposiblity to make sure the info out about me and my family is something we want to give access to and if not, find a way to remove it.

I know for a fact that college admissions counselors do, indeed, check FB. Sadly, so many of our youth are rather thoughtless about their FB posts and this could really hurt their chances in so many arenas. We need to share with them that knowledge that the content of their posts could come back to haunt them.

I certainly agree that we all need to be conscious of the fact that our FB posts and any web posts, for that matter, might be shared or revealed at any time and then enter our posts accordingly.
