I do not like facebook either. I find it to be more for the teen crowd and similar to myspace. If you aren't twenty and currently at a party or driving to one, then you aren't cool enough for anyone to care that you exist in that realm. also, there are FAR too many goofy tests, pies, gifts, etc.

I'm not into the food fights and booze mail etc either. I'm on facebook and quite frankly, I don't know why. My sister got me started on it. I have a profile but I hardly ever use it. However, having said that, I see a change coming.

I heard on the radio a few days ago that facebook membership has dropped lately. It seems that the older crowd (moms and dads) are getting in on the action and this is putting the teens off. They don't want to hang around with the parents. Combine this with the fact that facebook is selling ad space, I think it'll become more business friendly. It's the upkeep that's hard. Still, I met another VA who I may be teaming up with in the near future from a VA group on facebook. So, you never know what opportunities are out there. There are many facebook groups just for VAs but not many of them are active. A lot of them are dead groups and those are the ones to stay away from.

I did like facebook in the beginning before all those applications. Now there are just too many of them. I decided not to add any applications. I keep my profile short and basic.

I have thought about this again, and I am not going to do the "social networking" thing again.

Why?
a. I have just got fed up with it (in general, i mean - at the beginning of the year i used to LOVE facebook, now i'm hardly ever on it!!!).
b. Word-of-Mouth is generally a better way of getting your business accross - also with other businesses talking about your business to other businesses (if you know what I mean )

Hi, in reply in my experience, facebook hasn't been successful for me in obtaining clients, but that hasn't been my aim. I have my facebook account for family and friends, hobbies (I make jewellery) and for networking with other like-minded virtual assistants, to share ideas, problems and solutions with each other. The only contacts I have received from so called "clients" have been spam emails asking for my bank account!!, I know this because my personal email address is on facebook and for some reason facebook doesn't allow you to change your primary email address, so "business" emails have been sent there, whereas clients would look at my website. I hope this helps.
