I signed up for it a couple weeks ago, but only with the required information but nothing extra yet. I was wondering what if any leads would come out of it? I was hoping it might get me some google search exposure.

Linked In was the first networking site I joined. Like anything else, in the beginning I was relatively active on the site trying to find new clients. I keep my profile up to date because as it's been mentioned, when I google livewire virtual solutions, linked in is at the top of the list.

I joined a couple of VA groups there too and found a few gems.

I'm on Linked in and have a few contacts on there. I would love to link up with more. Most of my clients are the ones I have to help with social media marketing so they are only on there if I put them there. I do believe to make the most of LinkedIn you need lots of contacts and good feed back.

Linkedin is a professional business site - its a great place to list your background and meet people from all over the world. The secret to Linkedin is to join groups that interest you and to join in the conversation when you can add value. I am an open networker in that I have my email on the site and anyone can ask me to connect with them I rarely say no. As my daughter was earning her MBA I encouraged her to get on Linkedin - she found her first job through a connection.

At the very basic level, LinkedIn is for networking. You can build a friend list of diverse resources. Down the road, let's say you need a realtor. You go to LinkedIn, look at your list and may be able to utilize that realtor in your friend list. Or someone you have linked with may need a VA in the future or know someone who does and will refer them to you since they are linked to you. It's a who ya know thing. Run with the other features from there.

I use it. You can think of twitter and Linkedin this way -- if twitter can be viewed as a social party, then LinkedIn is a professional conference. LinkedIn is a place where professionals go to make contact with colleagues, rekindle contact with former colleagues and to keep tabs on happenings at companies of interest.

After you set up your profile, import your connections and join groups, participate in the Group discussions like you do on this Forum. Keep adding to new connections as you go along. Just like Forums, participation is key, so people get to know you as the go-to person in your niche. As mentioned, a side benefit is that you get a backlink to your site or blog, plus it's one more strand on the web where folks can come in contact with your message.
