I just posted a profile on linkedIn and joined several virtual assistant groups. However, would also join small business owner groups that are in need of VA. Do you know any? How do you use LinkedIn to attract new clients. Thanks!

Nellie LinkedIn can be very useful to get your name out but you need to belong to groups where your prospective clients might hang out. The only reason to belong to VA Groups is to gather information and exchange experiences. Personally I feel that this forum has all that and a whole lot more and is the only VA platform I belong to. Hanging out in VA groups is rather like peeing up the same tree as your dog.

Try to decide who your target market is and join groups where those prospective clients might be. Most of my groups are legal or social media as that's my area.

Just my two pennyworth.

Lynne, glad to know that's what others do, joining groups in their target market, and I need to be more persistent in doing it myself. I tried with a few groups but because I wasn't actually in the field my request to join was declined. Need to find some that are more open in my target markets.

Pam is there a university near you? Different university departments and profs often need transcription. There's a huge one here, a small city in itself, and I often wondered how it would be possible to get my name in there. A couple of days ago a grad student emailed me re transcription but I've not heard back yet, though I've had internet issues for days until a tech from heaven turned up tonight.

As you may know, I take my dogs to run at the local dog park at first light every morning and recently have been walking with a lady who is a part time prof at the university. Like me, she's a total animal lover and at the bark park we both look like bag ladies, covered in pawprints and dogspit, so we hit it off immediately.

I mentioned it casually to her this morning (I never push my services, plus I'm not too awake at 6 a.m. either ). She said they often need transcriptionists, during the academic year there's a weekly campus newspaper that's inexpensive for advertising and, in the meantime, she'd email some colleagues, talk to people and get the word out. If, along with what I currently have, I can get steady work from the university I'll have a very full practice. Keep your paws crossed for me!

Lynne

Lynne, I have had several transcription clients from surrounding universities over the years, mostly doctoral students. In fact I just met with a new client today who is a doctoral student and will be conducting qualitative research for her dissertation with recorded interviews. And I will be transcribing those.

I will definitely keep my paws crossed--and I'll ask my cat to do the same!
