Default FB privacy: Set me straight?
A belated thank you to Kimberly for this post several months ago. I set up a new FB Page for my business a few days ago and ran across Kim's post just this morning.

Lack of hard separation between Profile and Page is exactly the reason I deleted my first FB business page not long after opening it a little more than a year ago. The privacy concerns in this article are making me rethink keeping the new one.

I can't seem to verify what parts of my profile are truly public. When I log out of both FB and Google, then use Google to search my own name, the partial FB profile that appears among the hits does not show any Likes, and those are supposedly public. Since the Likes that they SAY are public don't show up, I wonder what IS there to other users that I don't see. It's very creepy to think that some faceless stranger might have access to, for example, all my kids' photos that I've shared with friends simply because I clicked my own Like button.

I think I'm rambling a bit, so here's my basic question: By having a Page in FB and a FB Like button on my blog, am I leaving more Profile info out in the open than I realize?

I sometimes wonder if FB will turn out to be that creepy big brother from the book 1984. I don't put anything personal there, even on my personal page. Several people I know have been hacked, with their acct sending out stupid videos to their "friends". I especially do not trust the idiotic apps!

No. There is no link that is visible to anyone between your FB fan page and your personal profile. The only info available to anyone not a FB friend of your personal profile is according to how you have your Privacy settings set.

Your fan page will be visible, public and indexed by the search engine (as long as you don't have it set to over 18 or marked that it includes adult content.) But, none of the people who "Like" your page will know that you are the admin or who any of the Admins for your page are. If you want to see what is public for your fan page, copy your Fan page URL. Log out of Facebook and paste the URL in your browser. This will show you what is public and visible to those outside of FB.

You can do the same with your personal profile, copy your personal profile URL, log out and then check the URL in the browser. Also, within the Privacy settings, there is a button that will let you click to see how others see your profile even when they are logged into FB.

As far as the Like button on your blog goes, it doesn't give people access to your personal profile. If you click on your own Like button on your blog, it will post to your profile and your Newsfeed and show on your blog that you "Liked" that post or that page, but only your FB friends will see it posted in their Newsfeed or on your profile. It doesn't give anyone who is not your FB friend access to your profile.

The only thing to really be careful of, is clicking the "Like" button on other websites as this can give them greater access to you (such as the ability to target messages at you or add you to one of their pages.) It can also give them access to some of our demographic info, but it won't give them access to your photos or other personal information. I'm pretty selective about clicking "Like" buttons out on the web just because you can't always be sure who is getting what info and what they will do with it.

Hope this helps.
