Facebook Professional Page vs. Personal/ Fan Page
Good Morning, Everyone.
I am trying to decide how to get the best use out of Facebook. I will be doing several things on the side for passive income, including resume writiing and want to make sure I utilize the best exposure.
I notice that some of you only use facebook professionally (e.g. your company name in lieu of your birth name) and seem to use it for business only (like Macys)
What are the pros and cons of that approach?
Thanks,
Caroline

Re: Facebook Professional Page vs. Personal/ Fan Page
Hi Caroline,
In my opinion, the best use of Facebook is a combination of business and personal. Afterall, it is called "Social" media. A combination of both business, and personal posts endears you to your FB friends... gives them the opportunity to get to "know" you... and ultimately, people want to do business with people that they "know". Additionally, a strictly business page, may be percieved as intrusive or "ptchy" which could become annoying to some. Similarly, a page full of "Jr's first steps" may alienate your FB friends that are interested in your business. So the precise mix of the two is crucial. That's my two cents worth. lol. Hope it helps.

Re: Facebook Professional Page vs. Personal/ Fan Page
Thanks for your feedback. I've seen people who do strictly business or minimal personal information, and interestingly at least from my perspective it appears to really work in their benefit.
Sigh.. I really wish Facebook would allow more than one page. I have yet to truly see the value of fans pages at all.
Lot of thinking to do.
But thanks!
Caroline

Re: Facebook Professional Page vs. Personal/ Fan Page
Hi Caroline,
With Facebook, you are allowed one account. Within this account you have your personal profile and then you can multiple/unlimited Business Fan pages. If you don't wish to use your personal profile at all, then you set it to be completely private and not indexed by search engines by using the privacy settings. You could also set up your profile page to have minimal information or to just be a business profile for you. This becomes difficult however, if personal acquaintances find you and ask to be your friend. Yet, you can still have public Business Fan Pages even if your personal profile is completely private.
Facebook's terms of service only allow personal profile accounts in the names of real people. Businesses who have used the personal profile as their business page, are in violation of Facebook's TOS.
The beauty of a Business Fan Page is that people can become "fans" without needing your approval and even though you are the Admin for the fan page, no one has access to your personal information, your personal profile, or even your name, unless you post your name somewhere on the fan page.
There is quite a bit of value in having a fan page, but that's a whole other post.
Hope this helps.

Hi Caroline-
It is true that you can only use one account for personal use. But as mentioned before you can then create as many business pages or groups as you like. I would encourage any VA to do this. Create a page and then invite your clients to become fans--this is a good way to spread word of mouth marketing for you VA business. If you are not sure how to create a facebook page I have an free 5 min video tutorial posted that will show you how:
How to Create a Facebook Page
I hope this helps-and wish you the best of luck!

Colin,
I do have a post up on my newest blog that covers some of the great reasons why a business should be on Facebook. You can check it out here: Why Be on Facebook?

Megan, I was watching your video, but when I checked on my Facebook page, I could not find where it said to add a page.
Could you please help me out with this?
Thanks

Sure! Okay so when you sign in on Facebook and you are on your home page look at the left side at the top of page where your menu is: this shows friends, groups, etc. There is a link in the list that says Ads and Pages. Click on the link and then once the page opens there is an option for pages located again on the menu to the upper left side of the page. Once you open it you will see an option to create a page. Let me know if you still have trouble (I could share my computer screen with you to show you exactly where it is.)
Hope that helps-
