Default Facebook - 2 separate accounts or not?
Hi all

I have a fairly long-standing 'personal' Facebook account with loads of photos, lots of contacts from the past and present, etc., just like most of us.

My question is: do I keep two separate accounts, i.e. one for DiamondVA and my original, personal one?

I have read that linking the two together could potentially damage business by potential clients looking at the personal account and not liking what they see... I hasten to add at this point that there isn't anything compromising on mine (yet...)!!!

What do others do?

Many thanks, as ever, for your time and comments.

Cath,

By their own TOS, you can only have one FB account, which for you is personal. Start a page for your business, as you can have as many as possible.

I have many people that I have met at events and even clients that are friends on my personal page. Of course I am very selective of what I post on it but it is nice for them to get to know that side of me. Then again I am very selective of what I post period. My gram once said, put it in writing and it is around forever. So I always try to remember that.

Your Gram was right, Lee. There are so many stories of people posting things on Facebook and then getting fired from their job. Be very selective of what you post on both your personal profile and your business page.

Lee is right. You can only have one Facebook account, which includes your personal profile and then you can set up as many separate Business pages as you want from that profile. People who join your Business page do NOT have access to your personal profile unless you let them become a "friend." In fact, fans of Facebook business pages do not even know who administers a business page.

It's perfectly fine to keep your personal profile separate and just funnel all business contacts to your business page with a note that you keep personal and business separate and you'd be happy to connect with them on your business page. I know people who choose to do this. However, I also agree with Lee that sometimes clients or business contacts also like to connect personally and I've allowed that to happen as well but am careful about what I post to my personal profile with that in mind (yet I still allow myself to me). For clients that I accept friend requests from that I don't necessarily want to have access to all my personal stuff, then I use my privacy settings to limit what parts of my profile they can access. This way, you can accept a client or business contact as a friend and still limit what they see. For instance, some clients I am friends with but don't allow them access to my personal family photos.

If you don't want any business contacts or clients to find you or access your personal profile, you can set your privacy settings accordingly. That's key. Know your privacy settings really well and you can make them work for you and protect you.

I absolutely agree about using the privacy settings rigorously! Unfortunately even if you are conscientious about what you post to your FB personal page, there are times when people will post to your wall that are not quite as thoughtful about the downstream impacts. While you can delete a post, it's certainly possible you may not see it before it's already done damage. Use those privacy settings!

Thank you all very much. Kimberly - I just started reading your excellent pages then realised the potatoes I'm cooking for potato salad to take to a BBQ later were boiling over - I was so engrossed! So I've book-marked them for later!

I am glad you asked this question. I didn't realize or have the time to find out that I could have a business account on Facebook. I just created one and am feeling more empowered as I learn about so much free advertising. Thanks a lot!

Dawn,
What do you mean it wants to link to your personal page? When you set up a business page from your account, you are automatically the "Admin" for that page, so when you are on the "Edit/Settings" page, you will see you own profile off in the right hand column as Admin. But you are the only one who has access to this page, so no one who joins or sees your business page will know you are the Admin or have access to your personal profile.

Is this what you are referring to?

No, When I log in it says Dawn Kramer instead of Midwest VA Group. I think I shut it down because it was just way too confusing....LOL.

I actually just logged in through my daughters account and it pulls up one page that is my personal page and then it pulls up a page that has my logo but it says my name instead of my business name and there is not a page for Midwest VA Group. When I search for Midwest VA Group it shows two pages with my business name and variations of my logo but I dont' like either page and would love to have them both disappear so that I can make one great one that actually works.

Grrrr......LOL.

Dawn
