Default Tax Requirements by State
As you all know, tax laws and the types of taxes you are required to pay vary by State. I know a lot of the established VA's have already done the research and determined what type of taxes they need to pay.

I thought I would start a thread so that you can post the types of tax required in your State/County/City as well as a link to the corresponding website. I think this will be a valuable reference for newbies or even VA's who plan to move.

*I know there are many VA's in the same State, but please do not duplicate posts, it will make the thread too long.

Please list, your State name, the link and the types of taxes required.

OKLAHOMA

Oklahoma Tax Commission - For the following taxes:

State Income Taxes
Franchise Taxes - required for corporations only
Sales Tax - required for merchandise only, not services
State Income Tax Withholding (for employer's only)

Oklahoma County Assessor, for:

Business Personal Property Tax on equipment, furniture, computers, etc.

Oklahoma Unemployment Security Commission, for:

State Unemployment Taxes (for employer's only)

Great idea Rebecka! I needed to look this info up anyway

Washington (the west coast version )

Washington State Department of Revenue

BUT - Washington State does not have a personal or corporate income tax. However, persons that engage in business in Washington are subject to business and occupation and/or public utility tax. These taxes are based on gross receipts of the business.

Info on the Business and Occupation Tax

(The tax rate is based on your business classification. I believe the classification for VAs would fall under:
Service and Other Activities [04] This classification includes all other activities not otherwise classified. )

Note there is a Small Business Tax Credit applicable against the B&O tax.

(The Public Utility Tax does not apply to VAs)

-----

By the way, I came across this free resource offered in Washington where they will send a tax advisor to your office to help you understand your state tax responsibilities as a business owner. Click here for more info.

Thanks Tess! Beings we are in the State of Washington - I'm not sure if this is a county thing or not, but do we have to pay additional property taxes on the things we use for the business? I'm a little confused now. Guess I'm gonna have to call that tax consultant afterall.

Wonderful idea Rebecka!

Arizona

Industry Tax Links

County Links

Larger City Links

Miscellaneous Tax Links

Arizona Department of Revenue

AZ Corporation Commission

Each city has specific licensing and tax requirements, so it is best to go to "your city".gov to find out more specifics.

Hope this helps and good luck

Visit your state websites, the best way to find them is by doing a google search. Most states have their rules online, some states also offer free classes for new businesses.

Ok, I'm thoroughly confused I am in Washington State and trying to figure out this tax thing. I have not officially started my business yet and have no idea about anything tax related. I read somewhere that self employment tax is 15%- and I think that's beyond the regular income tax of about the same amount! Does that mean I have to pay 30%? Do I still have to pay self employment tax if I'm a business? I was considering just doing work on the side and then officially starting my business at the first of the year so I don't have to mess with business taxes this year- does that seem plausible or should I go ahead and set up my business before I take on any clients?
If anyone has any suggestions or advice on this- or even where I can go online to get some answers, it would be greatly appreciated

I'm having a similar problem. I am working part time in an office and part time with one client. I am starting a company with a friend and we are filed under a corporation. I am worried about the taxes that I will have to pay once taxes are due. The company isn't officially up and running yet, we just ordered our business cards and received our logo and setting up our website. We should be getting work soon, but in the mean time, should I be putting money to the side with this one client I have? I am afraid I am going to have to pay a lot in taxes when the time comes.
