Default Starting a biz in NH and moving to NC
Hi Everyone! I am in the process of getting my taxes and legal parts of my business set up and am having an awful time. I currently live in NH and would like to start up my business as a sole proprietorship. However times have gotten tough up here I am considering relocating to Denver, North Carolina to be with family in the upcoming months. I'm nervous as to how this might effect starting a business.

From talking with the local business groups I need to register a trade name in the state of NH. Then comes the business checking account with the company name and my EIN from the IRS (as I have chosed not to use my SSN for security purposes). I know I am required to pay Federal taxes, self-employment tax, and possibly a NH business tax. The problem is I have no idea how much, when, and who I am suppose to pay these to and state offices were not much help in telling me.

If I get everything set up in NH and then have to relocate in a few months, how can I plan a smooth transition? Would I have to stop working until I can get the taxes in NC sorted out? Any help on this or resources would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

When I relocated from Maine to North Carolina, it went very smoothly. I continued to do business as a Maine business until I registered my business here in NC. Luckily, the bank I have my business account with also operates in North Carolina, so I only had to change my address with them.
I don't have an EIN, so I don't know how that works. I made the decision to wait until I had relocated before I got one, and I just haven't done it yet.
I think you have an advantage knowing your planning to relocate, you can take that into account when you make your banking choices, etc.

That makes me feel a bit better. I'll make sure I have a bank that is both in my current and future areas and that will keep finances from getting too complicated. From what I know NC you have to register the business in your county once you move. Thank you for the info!
