Default Multiple businesses, one EIN?
Hey everyone,

My hubby and I started a business last year and it is in my name as a Sole Proprietorship. We have an EIN under my name for it, etc.

Now I am starting the VA business and when I went to the irs website it is stating each person only gets/needs ONE EIN even if they have multiple businesses. It states all businesses should be operated under the one EIN even if you have different DBA's.

Am I understanding this right?

Sounds right to me! A Sole Prop uses your SSI number so the EIN is attached to your soch.

If you changed your company to an LLC or Corp you would need to get a new EIN for each...

For sole props, the EIN is so that you do not have to give out your SSN. And for those who do tax prep and filing you should apply for a tax preparer ID so you never use your SSN.

Thanks! It is nice to have you ladies to confirm these things. I would be lost without you!
