Default Industry Codes for VA's (SIC or NAICS)?
I'm researching my "new" profession more thoroughly - business stats, competition, key business ratios, etc. - in preparation to complete my business plan. Does anyone know the Standard Industry Code or the National Code for Virtual Assisting? The closest I've been able to find (SIC #7338) relates to "Court Reporting and Stenotyping or Transcription" home-based businesses. Any hints?

Thanks,

I would pick a code that is closest to the service you provide. If transcription is what you are offering then that code would work. My code is related to bookkeeping, but there are some general admin codes too.

Try this page...
http://www.census.gov/cgi-bin/sssd/n...rch?chart=2007
Look under # 51, 54, 56, and 81

Personally I use #561 Administrative and Support Services (under #56) and will be adding #54110 when I become a Notary.

When are we supposed to get an industry code? Is it when we register our company officially? Please advise. Thanks!

I don't know about your state but here in Ohio, the state required a NAICS when I applied for my Service Vendor's License and State Farm asked for it when I applied for my Professional Liability Insurance.

Vicki, I am also in Ohio. How soon do I need to get the Professional liability insurance? Is this something I must have before I begin taking clients? Also, if you don't mind, could you give me a ballpark figure for how much that costs? I never even thought of the liability insurance. Ugh!

You can do a search and check out the differing prices for E&O insurance.

You should have it prior to taking on clients.

It's up to you as to when you get the PLI, I did it as soon as I started getting more than the occasional client, I went with State Farm as that's who my homeowner's insurance agent suggested. The rate is dependent upon your income and services offered. Call Kathy DeLong at 513-896-1100 and she can give you more details.

I used 56110 because of the bolded items covered items below...

NAICS Corresponding Index

Administrative management services
Business management services
Executive management services
Hotel management services (except complete operation of client's business)
Management services (except complete operation of client's business)
Managing offices of dentists
Managing offices of physicians and surgeons
Managing offices of professionals (e.g., dentists, physicians, surgeons)
Medical office management services
Motel management services (except complete operation of client's business)
Office administration services
Office management services

If you click here, it will take you to the NAICS Drill Down Chart for more information.
