Default Where do you store your client files?
I'm just wondering, my directory now consists mainly of documents for clients, and was wondering about storing them all online i.e google docs...

what does everyone else do? is it even safe enough to that? and what happens if the site is down?

Hi Kelly,

I don't store private files (ie passwords etc) online anywhere. I store them offline on my back-up hard drive. I read something recently about Google Docs (maybe it was here at VAF?) that discussed the insecure nature of it so I just don't do it. I would feel sick (not to mention out of business) if anyone ever gained access to my client's private files via Google Docs especially. Maybe that's just me being paranoid but I feel safer not doing it.

That's my concern!

I do use google docs for a client but that's at his request, but I also store a backup on my pc. I have an external hard drive also so maybe I will store a copy there....

thanks for your view on it X

Google Docs are okay for files that don't contain top secret information and I do store files there for clients at their request too. But, never passwords etc.

We built a private, password protected document library that we keep on the server and have sold the same to clients for their own use. I also use an external hard drive but prefer the library because I can give clients or subs password access to certain files if need be so they can upload, download or use what they might need when necessary.

I would never trust a third party storage system - I've read some horror stories that you can not believe. [example; Company A gives away X GB of free online storage. Months go by and people upload their images, files, work, contracts, etc. Company A decides it is giving away too much of a good thing for free so sends all of it's free members a note saying 'effective D-Day we will be charging for your account. If you don't pay by D-Day or remove your files they will be deleted. Sure enough, the people who didn't rec'v the email because they were on vacation, the emails looked like spam, or they just plain missed them - they all lost everything....]

I have an external hard drive as well. I'm not comfortable saving documents online.

I don't feel comfortable storing documents online either. Have heard similar horror stories as Tess pointed out. I have memory sticks for some clients that I store photos on and others I use an external hard drive that I back up every week.

I use an external hard drive for backup and work directly off of memory sticks (that I back up weekly).

Does anyone keep their back up files in another location? IE: A bank safety deposit box or something like that?

Right now I just store everything on a thumb/flash drive. Works for me.
