You guys inspired me! I've been meaning to set up automated backup for ages, but you know how that goes... So today I finally did it.

I've chosen online backup because it's easy to use, affordable, and off-site. For now, Mozy has won out. I get unlimited storage and it will back up my external hard drive. But as soon as Carbonite offers a service that will backup external drives, I'm going to switch over. I read that it offers better customer support and sounds like a slightly better product, overall. But Mozy sounds great, too, so I'm excited to start using it! It will be such a relief to finally have this in place.

I use Mozy and sometimes back up to a Maxtor drive a client gave me.

I was looking into buying an External Hard Drive myself. Has anyone used Western Digital? I heard this was supposed to be pretty good. Thanks for the tip on Mozy-it's nice to hear from others who have used this as well.

This is the same HDD I have which came bundled with MioNet software. I'm still running on the limited capabilities but, it didn't expire. The web interface is found at:

I run two laptops (XP) and a Vista 64 using this software

Bottom line - the HDD works great but download a different software perhaps the one above or use the Windows backup program - not the software that comes with the drive - it caused major lock ups with my Windows PC.

I just bought a Seagate external harddrive. And I plan to also use Carbonite.

I back up using an external hard drive. Officemax had great sale on 1TB hard drives. You can program an automatic backup at the frequency that you desire.

I havent started my business yet but I am about to get two external hard drives - one to use excuslively with my laptop and one to back up everything from my desktop and laptop - obviously this will be the bigger harddrive. I will also have DVD backups of archived client files. I will also have a pc exclusively for my own personal stuff so the other two computers will be strictly for client work only.

There are several programs out there to back up a PC, but I yet to see anything remotely like TimeMachine. I absolutely love it, and it has saved my butt three times now. There are some great suggestions in this thread and if I come across an awesome back-up for PC, I will definitely let you know.

I have the hard drive - but it's the software that does the auto back up and sync that I am looking for -- cause this is a demo.

What a good thread. I realise I need to get this sorted now so I've just purchased an external hard drive (Western Digital). I'm also going to look into online backup. Although at first I thought that doing both was unnecessary I think that they each provide security in different ways. If I just went for online backup then what would happen if there was a problem with the provider or internet availability. If I just went for an external hard drive then what would happen in the event of fire and theft..... I'm going to play it safe and go with both!

Thanks,
Sharon

hi
I have a 500gb external hard drive which is password protected. I back up everyday and it is kept away from my office over night. Having lost data due to power cuts and people errors. It is essential and only takes a few minutes but can save you hours.

Regards
Karen
