Default Storing passwords safely
Howdy

I've got lots of log in details/passwords for lots of different sites, and now I'm having trouble remembering them all.

I'm scared of writing them down in fear of losing them, and I won't write them in a database/spreadsheet in fear of my laptop being stolen...yep I'm like this but I've got to consider client confidentiality etc.....

how and where do you store your passwords and log on info?

Kelly - You're smart to have different sign-ins for different sites, but remembering them is a problem! Maybe the best solution is to store them both on and offline - two places. Or, if theft is a worry, make a digital version and save it on a DVD.

I was thinking that too. Maybe a memory stick would be a good place. Just don't forget where you put it!

I learned a tip from an organizer and was told by my husband, a small business consultant, that this was a good idea. Use those business card holders and then write passwords on slips of paper that fit in there. Store it in a locked filing cabinet. Of course storing a digital copy that is password protected may be a good idea in addition in case the paper copy gets destroyed.

Not sure if this link will work or not - there's another thread on passwords here. It has a bunch of suggestions there. If that link doesn't work, try searching for "keeping track of passwords".

I have a password protected Excel spreadsheet on my desktop at home, I don't keep information like that on my laptop. I also recently just got an Internet Password Organizer which is a hardbound book w/ pages to store all your passwords, including internet/network settings, license info etc. I LOVE this thing! The problem with the Excel spreadsheet is that I would forget to put info into it as I was setting up accounts. Now, I keep the IPO on my desk and add stuff to it as I set-up accounts and then I store it in a locked file cabinet. I still ad the most important stuff to my Excel spreadsheet just in case I'm out and need a PW, I can sign-on to my desktop via remote access and look it up.

You can check out the Internet Password Organizer here.

I too use an internet password organizer. I keep it handy during the day along with my notepad and I lock it up when it is not in use. I used to use a password protected program but since switching to a laptop as my main hardware I no longer have any passwords on there.

I use Roboform for my own passwords but not for confidential stuff like bank accounts, etc. Also keep a printed list locked away.

I use a memory stick for clients' passwords and a printed list locked away.

I'm going to check out some of the other options mentioned here. Love to learn new stuff!

Rebecka - I enjoyed your response here. It strikes me that having pen and paper handy when on the computer is a necessary thing, because it's still the case that jotting something down is the quickest way. (Have you also noticed that it's easier to remember if you actually hand write it?)
