Question Security when transferring files over the internet
Tamika recently started a very helpful post on how to keep passwords secure. And I've read several posts on securing documents on computers and hardcopy storage. I was wondering now about the transfer of work through email. I've done a search of the forum on "security" and "confidentiality" and don't see this already talked about it - but I may have missed it - so forgive me if this has already been discussed.

Can anyone share what they do for security on emails and/or their attachments (Word, Excel, Access, etc)? Passwords? Encryption? If you use passwords, how do you share the password with those who need it? Or do you transfer files some other way? I know you can share and secure files on places like Google Docs, but uploaded docs don't seem to preserve exactly the same formatting when you open them there.

Is there somewhere online that can act as kind of secure "holding area" for any kind of electronic file? Where you could set up access rights to each file.

Thanks for any advice on this.

Deb

Deb,

I have a free account at Officezilla where I have clients upload any files that need to be kept secure. I can them download them as needed and a copy stays in the account until one of us decides to delete it.

I use ciphersend.com. It costs about $38 per year and gives you a secure email link. Clients upload their info to the secure service, you are notified by them and can then download the information. I read elsewhere that you can do the same thing with gooledocs. I haven't checked it out yet to make sure its https.

well as a medical transcriptionist it is always an issue sending confidential files...Normally we send files directly to the clients FTP which is of course very secure. However at times, I send files thourgh Yousendit, (http://ftf.yousendit.com/?home=true).

It is free...ftp-like...and secure

For you to feel more secure, use encrypting tools such as Winrar or Winzip(free downloads) and make sure you encrypt and put a password on it.

Thanks so much for all of your suggestions. It's been a long time since I worked with FTP and forgot all about that as an option. I'm very glad there are some online "holding area" options too - I wasn't even aware there was such a thing available. Perfect!

Thanks again,
Deb

Has anyone used Clientspot? I see their banner at the top of the page and wanted some opinions.
