Users of the world's most common web browser have been advised to switch to another browser until a serious security flaw has been fixed.
The flaw in Microsoft's Internet Explorer could allow criminals to take control of people's computers and steal their passwords, internet experts say.
Microsoft is investigating the problem and preparing an emergency software patch to resolve it, it says.
Internet Explorer is used by the vast majority of the world's computer users.
"Microsoft is continuing its investigation of public reports of attacks against a new vulnerability in Internet Explorer," said the firm in a security advisory alert about the flaw.
Microsoft says it has detected attacks against version seven of the browser - its most widely used edition.
But the company warned that other versions were also potentially vulnerable.
Thank you for telling me!! I have to be honest I prefer IE over firefox. I can't get myself to use firefox long enough to see if it is better than IE. I love all that IE has to offer and it is so easy to use. Luckily I keep my computer up to date and I have Vista which has a protected mode on. I will try to use firefox until this issue is resolved.
I heard about this on the radio today as well. I use Firefox on my laptop because IE keeps crashing on it (XP). I should really get into the habit of using Firefox. I use Safari and Firefox on my Mac. I also have Opera installed - just to be able to test websites, especially since I'm now working with Dot Net Nuke.
Thanks for the heads up. I hadn't seen this posted anywhere else. I just downloaded Chrome and am already notcing how much zippier the pages load compared to IE. I've never used anything but IE before so this was a good nudge to try something new.
