Default Indescructible Viruses! Help!
Hello again,

I posted here yesterday about my Google Calendar problems which were caused by a or some viruses in my computer. While I'm sure my AVG Virus Scan took care of 267 threats and got rid of them, I am still faced with 3 Pop ups which were there before the scan. I have been scanning and cleaning every hour and STILL these pop up:
*Powered by ZEDO
*Antivirus 2009
*www.spock.com

Does anyone have any idea what I can do besides ripping the hair out of my head? It is extremely disruptive and I just want to crash my computer right now. Do I actually have to go out and pay for some sort of protection against these things?

Hopefully someone will be by soon with suggestions.

Thanks so much

Helen.

Hi Helen,
I am sorry I don't have any answers for you. One of my laptops actually has something running on it too. I've tried everything I can think of to find it so I can remove it. Whatever it is makes my computer run so sloooooow.

Even though I can't offer any help I totally understand the frustration. I would love to use mine as a target for target practice. Aparently, this in not legal...lol. I read an article not that long ago about a guy who was having computer problems and go so frustrated and mad that he shot it. Well he was arrested. It didn't say what the charge was but gave the message "not to shoot your computer".

Best of Luck

Are you using the AVG Free Virus Scan? I recommend buying the product. It's only about $30 but it will most likely fix the problem and is better that having to take it in to have it completely cleaned. Also, for $30 you are protected for two years.

I had one of those pop up trojans on my laptop and my AVG (purchased) version caught in one day and stopped it before any other trouble. The free stuff is only get you so far.

Ahhh you can shoot your PC, you just can't do it at your house. LOL Take it to the nearest shooting range. I've shot all kinds of stuff there! [Well, no humans or puppies.]

Helen -- Not all pop-ups are viruses. Some are just pop-ups. Check your Internet settings. Try downloading a different browser like Firefox.

Also, check out www.komando.com . It is the web site of Kim Komando. She hosts a radio show on computers and technology. She has a LOT of freeware, programs, and general information. Chase down a different virus program and use it.

Then, start looking for some better programs. I pay for McAffee and have for years. I rarely ever get tripped up by a virus, but every now and again I run a freebie just to check.

A word of advice -- If you are going to be interacting with clients via email, FTP or any other online manner, invest in a quality virus protection software program. You don't want to give or receive a bug with your clients. Some are trojans and could shoot crucial client information into the cyberworld. There are some good free ones. Take the time to check into them.

First things first, stay off the infected computer!! If there was that much stuff on there then you probably have hidden trojans that may spread or get worse if you keep working. Next call your computer guy and have him clean your computer.

Until your computer is given a clean bill of health from your computer guy, do NOT send any emails or share files with anyone, because you may spread it.

Lori Lee,

Thats a hilarious story!! Thanks for sharing that. You know what? I uninstalled AVG and all the pop ups have disappeared funny enough. However my computer is now unprotected and I am looking to download a free anti virus thats not to big cause i don't have enough space to download Norton. Anyone have any suggestions?

It would seem that th AVG gave me more problems than I originally had. Oh I don't know anymore.

Helen.

Hello People,

I think I feel real dumb here. I took Robin Ann's advice and went into Tools and there was soemthing that said "Turn on Pop up blocker" so I clicked on that. This obviously means that it was not on! Could this have been my problem the whole time? Oh man, I hope this will finally do the trick. I feel a little stupid and embarrassed here.

Thank you for all the great info...and my slow laptop thanks you. I actually have two laptops I work from and my favorite one is the one acting strange and running slow. Since I am not sure if it is a memory problem or a virus I don't send emails, etc. for fear it will infect others. I will try some of the advice and see if I can get it back to normal if not I might just have to bite the bullet and take in to get fixed.

No worries I won't be shooting it at home...lol. Robin I am so glad you you clarified you don't shoot puppies and/or people. To recover any sanity I have left if my tech guy says it is a lost cause I will for sure take it to the range and enjoy putting it to rest.

That would be a good idea - especially if you are sending documents to and receiving documents from clients. Do you want to be responsible for infecting a client's computer and potentially lose a client? I would think $30 or $50 would be a small price to pay vs. the cost of lost revenue.

I think something that a lot of new VAs do is go cheap on things like software and I think that's a very bad idea. Free isn't always good. My feeling is that you get what you pay for.

Oh I have NEVER done something like that!

Don't worry about it. Anyone who has ever looked at a computer has done something very similar. It's just like having a power outtage in the middle of the day, walking in a room, and flipping the light switch.

Look at it this way ... I bet the next time you start wondering about pop-ups and slow computers you'll check!

Now ... move along little doggies.
