Question Google Hits
OK, so I'm full of questions but I know I'll find the answers here!

When I google my website name (Virtual Girl Friday) or my URL (www.vgf.com.ua) I find myself on the first page of google. But most potential clients won't know my name or URL yet so how do I make myself searchable by "Virtual Assistant". This term appears in my website many times but I can't find myself when I search "Virtual Assistant".

I did click on the google icon which submits my site for testing.

How do I move up the google latter so to speak? I created a blog because I was told this would help, but so far I can't see the evidence.

Any advice?

Aha - the secret of all secrets and truly the challenge of *anyone* with a website in an industry chock full of competition. Deb was so right to point you in the direction she did.

Also, if you check out the Website Reviews section and read the responses for each site that are related to on-site SEO (discussion on page titles, content, etc.) you'll find a lot of useful tips. Of course, you can always start a thread for your own URL there too and get tons of feedback specifically for your site

SEO (search engine optimization) is an ongoing process. You're basically jockeying for position in a literal sea of VA websites so it's good to consider SEO as a part of your ongoing marketing efforts.

Building quality links back to your site in directories is also an easy, but time consuming, part of the process.

In general, it takes nothing more than an investment of time to move your site up in the search results, but bear in mind there are lots of other VAs doing the same thing so be patient and keep tweaking your site and linkbuilding practices based on the info in the section Deb pointed you to and over time it will make a difference.

There are other ways such as social bookmarking sites (which I haven't explained here yet but will soon), and linking your site back in your signature in any forums you participate in (just having a signature link on our site here indexes a new VA site much, much faster).

As very rightly mentioned by Tess, all that you need to do is to optimize your website.

This needs to be done in two phases.

Phase-I: is the content optimization, wherein you will need to ensure that all the contents are written around Key Words, Key Word Phrases (which again needs to worked upon keeping in mind your core services you want to offer), Phase-II: Search Engine Optimization: This is definitely moe challenging than the Phase-I. You can try few things your self for this like:
1. Submitting your Website to a large number of Directories preferably manually. ( There are websites those claim they can automate it, but I always have a doubt, since all the directories have their own system).
2. Submitting articles on variety of forums, posting advertisements like on craiglist, it also helps in geneating links.
3. getting back links- as many as possible. When you link to someone with good rating, you also gain out of it.

I will also suggest you to consider choosing Keyword Phrases instead of Keyword, because of the competition in the market. Optimizing a site for a key words with high competition in the market is definitely a more challenging task.

Hope, above points will help you to some extent.

Cool! I just googled "virtual assistant boulder" and found myself on the front page twice! One was from this forum and the other was from my own web page. I must be doing something right!

I have googled "office butterfly" on google and I'm number 1! I have also googled "virtual assistant kent" and i'm on page 2 (linked within that page linked). Also googled "Virtual Assistant Office Butterfly" and I'm on the first few links too!!

I must be doing it right then, but I still need to do some extra homework before i'm no.1 on SEO's!

It's quite normal to Google your own company name and come up on the first page - because that's your URL and usually is heavily written up in the content. It's the more generic terms that you want to aim for like 'virtual assistant' + your location, etc.

SEO is an ongoing process - once you reach a spot and want to climb higher or maintain you've got to keep doing the work needed to make that happen (ie - linkbuilding, blogging, articles, trading links, etc.)

As Tess says, it's the obscure search terms that are the trickiest really and something I am working on myself given that my web presence is relatively recent. On a search using "transcription specialists+ireland", on page 1 I am listed on two links plus my own URL is listed also. However, on simply transcription+ireland I am considerably further back. It's an ongoing process really so great to get tips and tricks on here.
