Default Domain Redirection & SEO
Hi all!

Would someone be able to tell me if it hurts the SEO for an established domain to forward it elsewhere?

I don't even know if this question makes sense, but I'm just trying to find out.

Thanks for your help!

Hi Shana!
Not sure I completely understand. Are you moving an entire site, changing the page names resulting in new URLs, or doing a 301 redirect keeping the URLs intact?

Hi Lisa!

Thanks for responding. I want to simply redirect/forward "abc.com" to "123.com" - just the main domain, no actual pages are involved for this. So there won't be any identical pages from "abc" represented on "123".

"abc.com" has been around a little while though so I was just wondering if forwarding it would affect the SEO, or if there's a way to preserve that at all, or if it even makes sense.

Sorry, I'm not a SEO person, so I'm not sure I'm explaining correctly. lol

I think I understand : )

Search engines rank individual "pages" not an entire domain, so SEO affects individual pages only. Make sense?

Be careful how you do redirect.
Search engines treat it differently

You'll really want to redirect individual pages, i.e.
oldsite[dot]com to newsite[dot]com
oldsite[dot]com/about to newsite[dot]com/about
oldsite[dot]com/contact to newsite[dot]com/contact
And so on

For any content that appeared on the old site but doesn't on the new site you should create a catchall so as to ensure anyone who access that old article or page gets redirected to the new site also.
