Default Would you ask for more money?
I've just built a database for a client, she's received the database ahead of schedule, and is currently working on it, and has been invoiced (payment yet to be received).

Now I'm having to do further adjustments, for things that she would like to add.

Would you ask for more money for this? or would you agree to do the work for free?

I don't want to rock the boat since it's my one of few clients, but I do have money to make

How would you deal with this situation?

What was agreed upon before the project began? Did you bill her hourly or a flat rate for the project? Did you agree to make changes for free or was there anything in place about that?

I have the same questions - we bill hourly always, for this very reason. Please post back with a few more details.

Well it was a fixed fee, I did say I would be happy to help and provide further support if required, but nothing was set in stone.

These kinds of situations can be frustrating but are great learning experiences (just what you wanted to hear, right? ) - if you do end up having to absorb the extra hours at least you know now to outline the details of the cost of updates, etc. for a project before you begin, in the future.

I may be in the minority here but I feel that since these are *additions* (assuming they were not mentioned by the client in the initial project description) you should let her know you'll invoice her hourly for the changes.

I'm curious what others think about this...

I agree w/ Tess. If they are additions then I would bill for them. This is why I bill by the hour.

I would definitely charge for the extra work. I do understand the delicate nature of the situation, but there's no guarantee that she will give you future business.

I would kindly explain that the extra work was not accounted for in your original proposal, and therefore she will be charged for the extra work. You can extend an olive branch and say, because neither of us anticipated the extra work and in the spirit of building a great working relationship for the future, I am willing to discount the price of my services. For example, if your rates are $40/hour, I would suggest charging $20-$30/hour.

You'd be meeting her halfway, getting paid and positioning yourself for future projects from her company.

If the scope of the project changed, then you should charge for the changes. If you were fixing your errors, I wouldn't charge.

Thank you guys!!

it turns out that she's offering me more work, so what I've agreed to do is instead of charging by the hour, I'll offer a set amount until the project is completed.

it's just data input to the database I built for a conference that she's organising. I guess it's worked this time.

But definately something to learn from.

Thank you :O)
