Default Extra for "Rush" Jobs
In doing some research on rates, I found a VA who says she charges double for a rush or 24 hr turnover job. Do you agree?

I charge 1.5 my normal rate. I think more than that is unreasonable.

Double rate does sound excessive. My policy is 25% surcharge for less than 24 hours and 50% surcharge for evenings, weekends or U.S. holidays. That said, I'm flexible about this policy depending on the circumstances so I state that rush rates may be applied.

We haven't run across this yet. Thanks for the question and great responses! We will definitely be prepared if this comes up now!

I also charge rather exorbitant rates for rush jobs, evening hours, weekend or holiday hours because I really don't want the work. Even in my regular job, I avoid overtime because I don't like this kind of disorganization, and I think it's poor management and not a wise use of either time or money. My policies state I don't normally work these times, but I will look at case by case situation to make a final decision. My non-standard rates reflect my dislike.

In my opinion, it depends on the client. If we have a good rapport and they typically do not spring rush jobs on me, I don't mind doing something in a hurry for them as a good gesture. To me, these types of things stick out in a clients mind, and set my business apart.

I agree. 1.5x for rush should be sufficient.
