Question Billing by the hour or the project?
Hey!

I am just getting started and I was curious about project billing. I've seen people talk about hourly billing and 15 minute increments, but what about billing by the project? Is that done? What if a client wanted you to put together a report or something? Is anything ever billed by the page?

Thanks,

Norma

Great to have you join us.

Usually, the way I do it depends somewhat on the client. If the client wants to do a monthly retainer, then I do by the hour, but if it is someone that has a special project and doesn't want to work with a monthly retainer, I charge by the project then. Sometimes that could end up into a monthly retainer type of relationship.

Good luck with your new business.

Starting out, I would suggest billing hourly. As you get more used to doing specific types of projects, and figure out how long a particular type of project will normally take you, then add project-based billing as well.

Thanks guys! That's what I was wondering about. I'm hoping to get started really soon and I need to get all the details straight. Thanks again for your help!

Hi,
I am a newbie and I bill by the hour as I am unsure with some things how long they will take me to complete, this way if the client asks then I can print the time bill out as proof.

Hi Norma,

I agree with Anisemama. Especially when you are just starting out, if you bill by the project you may spend more time on the project than you thought you would and thereby lose money. I've been in business for a few years and I always bill by the hour, it's safer.
