I thought I would comment that Paypal if you are already using it for business will also have a card reader. However, they are not yet available and they ask you to sign up to be notified when you are eligible to receive one. Its on the 'business' end of yor account where you sign it. In the same page is the option for their business Paypal card etc. Might be cool once its out just to keep things in the same place.

Just an FYI, the PayPal readers are available. There is just a waiting list if you did not sign up when they first introduced the reader. (Months before they went live with their PayPal Here readers, they had a "sign-up" form for those who were interesting in this service.) I have already received my readers for one of my PayPal accounts and I am waiting for one on another PayPal account.

I have a Square account and PayPal but I haven't used my Square account yet. I'm looking forward to using it with new clients for retainers! My personal trainer uses it and loves it! I also like that it shows I'm up on new technology when I can tell a client they have the option of paying with their credit card on the spot!

I have Square and love it, though I also do have a "real" merchant services processing account. The trick with Square is to assure you do NOT go over the weekly limit otherwise your funds are held up for 30 days. You can get them to change that but it takes awhile.

Two clients of mine just started using Stripe - super easy to use and highly customizable if you want it added to your website so people can pay from there. No contracts, no annual compliance fees, etc.

I'll also Echo what VAinParadise wrote about Intuit Payment Network - payments made by check are only assessed a flat $.50 fee and deposited directly into your bank account. I wrote a blog post about it some time ago.

I use square for myself and for several of my clients. Easy, easy, easy. The only downfall is if you are use to getting larger checks - the fees do add up. But since I still don't have a huge balance in my account - electronic funds are available much faster than paper checks.

I use square but I haven't for large transactions like retainers - so thanks for the reminder about those and the tip about intuit.

Square is great in Canada because its pretty much the only one that has minimal fees and is getting recognized.

A challenge with any of these swipers through your phone is that you can't use it if are out of the country of your account. I travel a lot so when I went to the states I couldn't use it - even though I had an american account, you need an american ssn number to use.

I used them until I had an issue and figured out how horrible their customer service is! A crazy client paid for services, forgot my business name and when she got the receipt, called amex to say she didn't know who it was. She remembered and called them back and hour later to say nevermind, she figured it out and it's okay. Well, AMEX had sent an alert to square, but cancelled it, but square proceeded to withdraw that payment from my account and held it for 60 days even though AMEX told them it was resolved and I had sent several emails with proof of this, and my client even sent an email to them! They didn't even respond! I got a form mail saying it's their policy to hold payments for 60 days while they perform an investigation!
Back to paypal I went and told Square where to stick it! That was awful!!!!!
