Default VPN-Virtual Private Network?
I have a client who is interested in giving me access/control of his computer so I can view his contact list and calendar.

I am curious if anyone has used a particular program/site that has worked well for them.

What are the costs if any?

How often have you used it?

Are there particular times when it works best or slows down?

Thank you all in advance for your suggestions, support and feedback.

I've never used one but I know a company nearby that sets the up. Here's their website if you want to contact them. http://www.ciacomputing.com/ If they can't help remotely, they may be able to give you some information and idea of cost.

I know some of the other members will be here to give you more advice but I'll share what little I know.

There are several programs that you can use to access another computer, some are free and some have free features but you have to pay a monthly fee to utilize the advanced features.

Here are a few:
GoToMeeting
GoToMyPC
LogMeIn

Hope this helps.

I use OpenVPN to connect to my (currently only) client's databases. I have never had trouble with it in 5 years now with it running 8 hours a day.

Luckily for me, a client that needed me to access his computer already had GoToMyPC. It saved me from having to incur a VPN expense, yet!

I have used GoToMyPC. Not complicated to use. Never had a problem with "freezing" on either computer.

I would definitely check to see if whatever service you are using allows (or better yet forces) encryption. Look for SSH or SSL or some other type. Most if not all of the previously mentioned items enable encryption for you, but I would double check. Especially if you have a wireless access point at your house.

In IT we almost exclusively use WebEX. It's a bit pricey for an individual at $39/month but they allow an extended free trial which may do you well for a quick session. The nice thing about it is that you tell a client to go to a web address and install an activeX component by signing into your session. It allows you to both control the session at the same time. When you're done, they can easily remove the software.

I'm fairly new so I can't put a signature yet however; I have about 7 years of IT experience and an MS in Information Systems so what your asking is what I do for a living.

You can also use a tool similar to GoToMyPC, it's called Teamviewer. It's free for individual use.

Check it out.

I tried a free trial of Hyper Office which everyone is raving about and when I signed in it was a http site. A salesperson from Hyper Office called me and I commented that I didn't feel it was secure. He claims it is but if I wanted a "https" address that it would cost an extra $199. I've always been told that if a web site isn't "https" it's not 100% secure. I told the HO guy that I felt for the price the https site should be included.

Tess can you or your husband confirm this for me?
