Default LogMeIn vs. DropBox
I have heard really good things about LogMeIn, from this forum and others, and I would like to give it a try.

Since I'm just starting, do I need the paid version, or can I get away with the free version for a while? My first client needs me to have access to his computer remotely, but doesn't need any files transferred.

I also have DropBox, so could I use that for file transfer? Is there another reason to get the LogMeIn Pro version BESIDES file transfer?

Thanks!

Sharon,

If your client needs you to access his computer then he will need to decide which version he would like. I have clients that I link with two using LogMeIn (one free, one Pro) and other have remote connects that their IT people have set up.

Just because you have LogMeIn does not mean that you can connect to their computer, they must have it as well and share their desktop with you.

I have LogMeIn Pro and use it when collaborating with my business support people. This was we can work on my documents and information in real time.

Thank you; that helps clear things up! I've started the free trial version - I will continue with that until my needs (or that of my clients) change.

I'm using DropBox right now, but was curious about LogMeIn. Let me know what you think of it once your trial ends. I may consider using it.

Thanks!

I was looking at the LogMeIn website and it appears that it is more geared towards Apple products (iPhone/iPad). Has anyone found that to be the case?

I have used LogMeIn rescue (as a trial version so far) and found it to be good. Is not geared towards Iphone of Ipad but apps are available if you want them.

You client does not the software but hew will need to access a pin code in LogMeIn123.com to allow you access to their PC.

Cheers

Fiona

I've used LogMeIn for both business and personal use. I started using it when I was still working as a real estate paralegal and bouncing between two offices in different towns and have always used it on a PC. It works great for remote access.
I've used both the free and pro versions, and although with the free version you have to come up with a work around for transferring files (e-mail, cloud based file storage, etc) and printing, the ability to work directly on the client computer works well with both versions.
I also use Dropbox for file sharing with a couple of my clients, Box.net for a few others and Glasscubes, Google Docs, and Zoho with others. They all work pretty much the same as far as their file sharing is concerned. Each have slightly different features, but they all work well for secure file sharing.

Wow Tina, that's quite an array of software you're working. How is it that you determine what best suits each client? Have you ever had a client who you needed to talk into working this way?

My clients are the deciding factor on what they use. Sometimes they come to me with accounts already opened (the case with Glasscubes and Zoho); other times I've given them a list of a few choice I feel might work well for what they are looking to do and let them choose the one they like best.
Most of my clients are 'cloud computing' ready. They've found me because they are ready to work this way. I've only had one client that was nervous about working this way. I didn't really 'talk them into' it, I just stated this was the way I did business, that it had worked well for all of my clients in his field, and pointed out how much easier it would make it for him to access information as well. He was sold the first time they had a major snowstorm where he was and he was able to work from home without missing a beat.

I just started using Dropbox with a client. It works well and is a much easier way to share files then emailing.
