Default Newspapers or the Internet?
Hello All

So a question was asked to me that I thought I would throw to everyone here, " What do you think is a better or most beneficial place to advertise a business at, in local newspapers or on the internet?"

The main concern for this question is how many people actually get the local paper delivered these days that will see a quite expensive ad now that so many things are being accessed via the web.

Thanks for any feed back you can offer.

Have a great day!

Sue,

I think that it depends upon the type of business and the target market that the business wishes to reach.

However, without having the answer to those factors, I would say that online advertising is a positive source for promotion. Are you referring to Craiglist or online as in social media and blogging? (Social media is promotion but through relationship building.)

I know that newspapers are a dying breed but much of what appears in the paper also appears online in newspapers' online edition. So this tends to receive a secondary audience.

You will never know until you test the waters.

I don't think I was much help only because I do not know what type of business and who the advertiser wants to target.

Hello Janine,

I had the same difficulty answering this question as well. What I gathered from the conversation is they are thinking of a new computer business, on a tight budget for start up. They haven't completely decided if it will be computer repair/maintenance or website design and possibly even both yet?

I asked if they meant Craigslist or Facebook for examples ...and the response was "not sure?" So without the decisions on really anything made as of yet I was struggling to offer an answer.

I thought with this post it might offer some different opinions that I could share to get them started ...to possibly making a decision(s).

After reading your response I am glad to see that I had the same feelings toward this question.

Thanks so much. :0)

Hi Sue:

Well advertising on the Internet is generally cheaper and it is to a wide audience. I plan to gear everything to the Internet myself. The newspaper just comes out that one day or week and then it is gone.

Hello Penelope :0)

This is true, you make a valid point. I was thinking Yellow Pages was a good start for both on and off the web. (but even that can be costly at start-up)

Thanks for responding, have a great day!

Hi Sue:

As a Realtor I have advertised in the yellow pages heavily. It has brought us a lot of business but it is expensive. Also I was charged the business rate even though in the beginning they said it would be residential with a cell phone. This is Qwest. They changed me to business without even informing us. I find many young couples do not have a land line, only cell phones.

Good luck,

Hi Sue,

Personally I go the way of Internet, Internet and Internet. Yellow pages might be useful if your service is only local, such as landscaping or window washing but people these days generally look for everything online. I don't even keep a yellow pages or telephone directory in the house.

Newspapers are here today, gone tomorrow. I never buy the local paper either and always read the news online.

I think LinkedIn would be a good way to start. It allows you to single out a particular group to market. You can just target a particular age, location, or group. Once I am up and running, I want to try it.

Hello

I apologize for it taking so long to get back to everyone's responses but the flu hit my house with a vengeance, boy I am I glad that is over with!

I have talked with a rep from Yellow Pages and was quite surprised on the extensive cost, Wow! I do agree it would probably work better for a local business like you mentioned, although these are still decisions still to be made for their business.

Newspapers was my worry since I myself have not touched a newspaper to look for anything actually in many years, I always refer to the Internet. LinkedIn is a great site, agreed. I like the ability to pin point groups on there.

I don't think when I was originally approached with this question, "newspapers or Internet" ...they had completely thought the details through and jumped the gun a bit. Thankfully with all of the wonderful and very helpful responses they are back tracking a bit back to the making some definite decisions before getting to the advertising table.

Thanks again!
