The imagery of a 'creepy old man' VA really made me laugh...
Your smiling face on your site, maybe in the 'about us' area is a superb idea...not only do people relate more immediately to what you're offering but it adds a nice touch overall.
As to press releases, I've always used logos, rather than my own image because it's an opportunity to make the brand more recognizeable - but if you're branding your site/services around your
own image then it makes perfect sense to use your photo.
Studies have shown (and all the major business consultants I've ever read say the same thing) that marketing with a human image is a positive experience for consumers all the way around (and translates to better sales).
