I have been volunteering at a local middle school coordinating a book drive with the Media Specialist for a progam called the African Library Project. I have been using my PR acumen to write press releases, set up an email lists, create brochures, etc. My company press release is here but the official release went out to the media yesterday through the school system. I wrote the draft for that one. Anyway, I just got a phone call that ABC News will be at the school in an hour to do a story on the book drive.

I don't interview very well..my voice goes into a squeak when reporters ask me questions. So I'm hoping I do a little better this time around (I was interviewed on Black Friday by Fox News coming out of the mall.)

The reason I am able to volunteer is because I am a virtual assistant. The job allows me to carve time out to volunteer at my son's school. Volunteering also gives me a chance to work face-to-face with people which is something that virtual assistant work does not allow and something I miss often.

Have to put on some lipstick....Wish me luck. Not sure if it will bring in any business (it would be nice) but it sure is nice to see that the publicity work I have done has worked!

Janine this is such wonderful news! Not only that you will get the opportunity for a little publicity for your business but that your hard work for this important cause has really made a difference

If the interview is available at all online please let us know where we can find it [I would even suggest asking them to email the story file to you so you can highlight it on your website, etc.] Very cool!

And you'll do great - just keep your confidence high...

Hi Everyone!

Well, I'm back from my 15 minutes of fame...

It was a short interview asking me about the book drive and what I hope the students at our school will learn. But off camera I explained to the reporter that I do publicity work for small businesses so it was easy to do the same for this volunteer project.

I was a little more confident this time and I wiped the lipstick from my teeth - ha!

Anyway, I walked the reporter out to the News van and gave her my card with the url for the African Library Project. Not sure if any work will come directly from the promotion of this but I'm fine with getting the word out about the actual book drive itself.

I do plan to promote on my website and in my newsletter. Maybe even write a blog piece about it...The reporter said they do post the video on the news website with a script so I'll be pulling that off after the piece runs tonight!

It is all very exciting! Thank you for your encouragement.

Janine, I wanted to follow up with this and find out if you noticed an influx of interested PCs after the interview? Also, were you able to get a clip from the local network to post to your website or blog?

Hi Tess,

I didn't notice an influx of interest from PCs due to the interview, however, I used the link to the news article which accompanied the TV clip in correspondence to PCs when I marketed my business.

So instead of writing a ho-hum response to a PC for a job I was interested in, I include a link to the paragraph about the TV clip describing the work I did for the charity which made my proposal much more interesting.

The clip was removed from the TV new site and I didn't download it at the time (my mistake) so I didn't link it back to my site. I'll know better for next time!
